City Mayor Opposes Scrapping Public Toilets
posted by May 30 at 15:45 PM
onMayor Greg Nickels sent the city council resolution authorizing the immediate removal of five automated public toilets back to the council this Wednesday without his signature, a move that has no impact on the unanimous (5-0) council vote, but which does signal the mayor’s disapproval of the council’s move to kill the toilet program.
According to mayoral spokeswoman Katherine Schubert-Knapp, the mayor declined to sign the resolution for two reasons: because “closing the public toilets now vs. the end of the year as was proposed means no alternatives are in place for people in need of a public restroom,” and because the council has not provided funding
to cancel the contracts and remove the toilets from their current sites.

How come Mak didn't talk about this crap?
What are we paying for spokespeople?
I'll bet if they sent a proposal to convert them into high dollar condos, he'd sign in a heart beat.
There will be a lot more crap in the alleys when the toilets are gone. Especially in Pioneer Square.
crazycatguy, theres already a lot of crap in the alleys. assuming that half the uses (between 80-110 per day) of the restroom are legit homeless people shitting, thats 50 more craps in they alleys per day without this thing. which is how many more than are currently shitting in alleys anyway?
I was in Victoria a couple of weeks ago and at night they bring out portable urinals and put them in the bar/club areas. Seems to work really well - inexpensive, easy to maintain, functional...all things Seattle hates. Check out the story here:

How many times do we have to say this? The URBAN REST STOP works! They serve like 5,000 people a year with toilets, showers and laundry, are fully staffed, and open 15 hours a day. And it costs less to operate than those 5 stupid toilets!! For pity's sake Mayor Nickels, scrap the silly toilets and BUILD MORE HYGIENE CENTERS!!
Dudes, we need public restrooms with attendants like any other world-class city has.
Just stop trying to cut corners.
I hate to say it, but the Mayor is right.
Gurldoggie, however, is really really right.
Hygiene centers in each major hood would work wonders...and then can we please get safe injection rooms near the market and Cal Anderson?
And now it hits the fan...
Really, people I expect you all to post the obvious puns before number 10.
