Megan found these (Limited Edition!) gigantic strawberries at QFC today (excuse the terrible photo). They are uniformly delicious and no one who has consumed them has reported unusual hair growth or a deepening voice. They are, however, very, very messy.
why does bigger=better in this country? what ever happened to taste? since they're 10 times bigger than the fraises du bois i had in france they must be 10 times better, no?
no.
The best strawberries I've ever had were found in a field by the landing strip in the Pasayten Wilderness. No bigger than a thumbnail, yet packed with flavor.
Considering how much The Stranger goes on about the environment (which I agree with), it is pretty ironic that you're eating what are probably GMO strawberries that were probably grown far away out of a plastic container with our own Strawberry season just around the corner...
There are two main types of strawberries, June bearing and everbearing or "day neutral". June bearing varieties set flower buds in the fall and ripen fruit in June. Most of the commercial production is provided by June bearers. Everbearing varieties set flower buds in summer and again in fall for two harvest periods. Day neutral varieties are similar to everbearing, but they bloom continuously during the summer and fall to provide an extended harvest season. Total season production of berries from the everbearing type is about equal to June bearers, but June bearers produce higher quality berries.

they're not *that* big.
sounds yummy though.
Let's ask Megan: Were they "retardedly good"?
Strawberries aren't in season here.

They're big b/c they've been crossed with frogs. And they taste good b/c they've been engineered to be sweet regardless of ripeness.
If Driscoll's strawberries are anything like their raspberries, they have to be terrible.

With a name like Driscoll's it just has to be horrible.

I had some of those same berries! They were insanely large and insanely good. :D
I hate big strawberries. Laterite is right -- the best strawberries I ever had were TINY things, pencil eraser-size.
