No. That’s not the ticket. This is.

Who the hell is that?

Obama/Richardson

Webb isn't a terrible idea, but I like the Strickland idea better. Governors are always good, especially D governors from embattled Appalachian districts in contested states.

Webb is a little bit of a loose canon ... Lots of talk about Strickland from OHIO. He's a clinton suppoter and can "bring the party together" and "solve O's white problem"

Yes, Dan, because what we need is:

(1) Someone with a military record, to reinforce the rightwing message that Obama alone doesn't have enough foreign policy "cred"; and

(2) To lose a really powerful progressive voice in the Senate, where the Dem majority is currently 50-49, from a red state where it would be extremely difficult to elect another Dem to replace him.

I'm in favor of Webb. I think he shores up the weaknesses, both by locale and by race, in a better way. Plus, he's a tough mofo. I'd love to see him debate, well, anyone, but especially Huckabee.

Fnarf, you beat me to it... I was writing that as you posted it. I like Webb a lot. Very gritty.

I think that Obama is either going to go with Webb, or Richardson. Except if he gave Edwards the spot for the endorsement.

please stop giving Drudge cred with your constant shout outs

also Edwards already said repeatedly he doesn't want the VP slot

This man is Jim Webb, junior Democratic Senator from Virginia. He beat George "macaca" Allen in 2006.

I'll add my voice to the pro-Webb chorus. His tough dude military background minimizes McCain's main selling point. He's also done well among working class white folks, whom Obama has done less well wooing. He may help bring Virginia into the Democratic column for the first time in a while. He would also play the attack dog role well (traditional for a VP candidate), while Obama stays positive and does the hope thing he does so well.

My only reservation is that his short time in the Senate adds to the "inexperienced" charge, though his prior experience as Secretary of the Navy may help mitigate this.

I want Webb to stay in the Senate.

Wes Clark would be great. Richardson would be awesome!

Edwards for Attorney General.

I think Bill Richardson would prefer to serve as Secretary of State than Vice President. Jim Webb is a fiery personality, but he's been a Senator for less than two years. I like Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius or Gen. Wesley Clark for Vice President.

Webb is just as green as BHO. Not much help despite the bona fides. And people hate Gingers MORE than they hate the Bi-Racial.

Again, Wes Clark.

Webb would be a horrible choice, as a junior Senator like Obama. You can hear the Republicans saying the presidency is not an internship just thinking about it.

Webb really isn't in the top ten of possible VP nods.

Even Clinton's ahead of him, and she's more like 9th. Dodd, Richardson, Sibelius - the top 3.

From Jim Webb's Navy Cross citation:

"Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body. Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker."

Holy shit!

@16, can't you just hear the Swiftboaters now, somehow spinning that into Webb being a filthy terrorist sympathizer?

Dodd would be a terrible, terrible pick. I really don't want another senator, especially a slick, rotund (and orotund) New Englander. So, unfortunately, would Sibelius. In another four/eight years, maybe. Richardson, for me, blew it with his appalling pres campaign, where he seemed confused and clueless most of the time, stammering and not knowing what his own views were -- and I started this campaign as a Richardson supporter. I don't think he's a good choice. Wes Clark would be excellent.

Posted by Fnarf | May 14, 2008 5:04 PM

Richardson would easily overshadow Obama as Secretary of State. Much better to put him in a role where he has more (election) face and less opportunity for independent thought.

Webb is my senator, and he's not a very good campaigner or speaker. I understand the interest in shoring up Obama's weak spots, and the guy is a war hero, but I don't think Webb is VP material.

I hope Richardson is, but again, I doubt it.

Is that Obama and Dale Earnhardt Jr? A compelling choice for the Red States, to say the least.

Whoever the VP turns out to be, I assume it will be a white man. No matter how qualified the non-white man picks may be, I think the calculation has to be that Obama is enough "new" already. Why would they give further doubt to the people who doubt changing the status quo already?

That being said, if it's not a white man, that would be fantastic.

Obama/elenchos 08

Because that's a ticket everyone can feel the same about.

Print a bumper sticker and I'll put it on my car, elenchos. Use a capital E, though.

@22: Yeah, unfortunately, I highly doubt Obama will go with Richardson. The "two brown dudes" ticket probably wouldn't stand up to the "two old white dudes" ticket with some people.

since racists won't vote him anyway why not shore up his bad showing with hispanics by taking richardson who also has experience - webb is another hawk former repubo - would really nice to see someone progressive be set up for 2012 or 2016.

Two first term Senators? I don't know. Seems like you're just asking for the GOP to hammer home the lack of experience issue.

#26 -

Webb certainly has the military background and his son is serving now.

But he isn't a repug type hawk. He thinks this war is so wrong on so many levels.

That said, I don't like his gun stance. (Everyone should have a concealed weapon.)

His public speaking has improved and he can throw zingers.

Should Obama pick him? No idea. But I'm very happy to have a presidential candidate whose *thinking* I trust.

I thought Webb was a goner here in VA when it was revealed he wrote a book that had a sex scene in it. It surprised me that 'macacca' was deemed worse.

We Virginians are nothing if not judgemental...

Webb's an awful campaigner - he hates doing it.

Besides, Kathleen Sebelius would be a better pick!

Wes Clark is too old and makes the John McCain is too old argument moot, which is the major argument in the upcoming campaign.

not going to happen.

Webb is all that, but so is Anthony Zinni, and we don't lose a senate seat:

Did any of the folks pulling for Richardson pay attention to, uh, his presidential campaign? He's a lousy campaigner, and it's hard to picture him running for Prez in eight years.

I agree, Dan. He looked TERRIBLE in the debates, like he was crapping his pants with fear or something.

Obama/Richardson. Their campaign slogan can be: "between the two of us, we make one whole white guy!"

Webb (I know because I live in Virginia) is an asshole. I voted for him because it was good to get a Democrat in the Virginia spot. I didn't like him and the only way he got elected was an the strength of Mark Warner and the sheer stupidity of George Allen. His record makes him a good running mate, but his personality and his campaigning ability suck.
