Portland does not deserve a mod abbr. like PDX.
Please stop perpetuating it
"PDX" has been around for a long time. There is no stopping it.
Plus they have real transit - they build it, we talk about it and then vote it down.
I kinda get what they're on about. No cross section of people is perfect, but there's a certain ingrained corruption in big city east coast police forces that isn't quite as prevalent out here. May just be looking to avoid officers expecting certain "perks".
Outside of that, PDX = Portland Airport, not the city. Stop doing that. The "X" doesn't stand for "international" like many think either. It's a meaningless placeholder like LAX has, or how Cheyenne appended theirs with an "S", from when airports switched from 2 over to 3-letter codes.
Yes, PDX is the airport. And yet we somehow manage to constantly use it to denote the city itself without major incident. We're on a precipice here, people...
Mock us if you will Bison! But it needs to be addressed before the North West has a "Frisco" on it's hands!
Frisco, Texas?
You Seattle dorks are so funny. "Don't call it PDX! Portland does not deserve such a thing! Portland isn't cool!"
So defensive you all are up there in that giant clusterfuck you call a city!
Why do you think people are moving down here in droves? It's because it's a better place to live.
Oh, Portland. Dear, we say these things for your own good. Some day you'll understand.
I always call Santa Barbara SBA, so why is this "bad"?
Look, calling Seattle or Tacoma SEA is wrong, because we are so far from the airport, but LAX or PDX aren't that far and you can get downtown without having to rent a car ...
Bigger issue: We continue to call our airport Sea-Tac. Screw Tacoma. Unfortunately, STL and SDX are taken.
Will, Seatac is a lot closer to Seattle the LAX is to Los Angeles (it's way the fuck out past Inglewood). Also, you'd never call LA "LAX".
And who the hell abbreviates a 2 syllable words with a 3 syllable word?
Doug, you ignorant slut, if you knew anything about LA, you'd realize it's a lot larger than you think it is. There's no magical invisible city limit stopping people from commuting three hours each way to work in LA ... which a lot of them do.
Actually, @11, it is SEA, which does stand for Seattle, but until we have light rail there, it doesn't count.
Ahhh, while this is true will about long commutes Will, the same is nearly as true for San Francisco, and Seattle for that matter. Crap, Ellensburg is about 3 cul-de-sac's away from being suburban Bellevue. But LAX is still considered "inconvenient", even by locals. It's almost 20 miles from anything someone might consider "downtown LA", like the Staples Center.
BUR (please don't start referring to Burbank this way now you Philistines), if you live in a connecting city, is actually a more convenience airport for most trips to LA, IMO.
Shit, where were we? Oh yeah, "PDX". Stop it! Wait, that wasn't the topic either?
Oh god ... the debate about pdx is inconsequential, but this is not uncommon in Oregon. It turns out Eugene, OR has had a long history of recruiting cops (and police chiefs) and ended up having a police force that was totally out of touch with community. Aside from it being really really reall really dirty (e.g. Officer Magina aka officer blow job), it had no sense of touch with the community. Basically, you take these midwesterners that were trained to profile in the midwest, and put them in hippy land. THEY GO NUTS. There were always these creepy stories of cops putting raids on birthday parties of seven year olds with slightly hippy parents.
This and the absolute MISERABLE record with charging rapists (in a college town no less) has made the people who have to live here have absolutely no faith in the police force.
shudder
Of course if all midwestern police officers were like Holly Hunter in Fargo, that would be fine with me...
The airport has "Tacoma" in its name because Tacoma contributed something like $100,000 towards construction when Sea-Tac was first built. The stipulation was that the airport carry the Tacoma name. There was a big stink when folks tried to rename the airport after Scoop Jackson.
Will, maybe you'd know that if you spent a little more time learning about your current community rather than making endless (and ultimately meaningless) comparisons to places you've lived before.
And "SBA"? Seriously?
@14 - oh, I don't know, my fave video Whats Happening in LA person doesn't have much trouble getting around.
But then, like most Angelenos, she drives.
When she's not camouflaged in her zebra pouf chair.
@ #16:
It was Frances McDormand (not Holly Hunter) who was the sheriff in Fargo. HH was in Raising Arizona.
You can't change the name of Sea-Tac now, it's actually in the city of SeaTac.
