Good Night, Sweet Prince

posted by on May 12 at 15:53 PM

The Robbins half of Baskin-Robbins departed this mortal coil one week ago today. That’s him on the right:

history_img1.jpg

Ol’ Irv Robbins grew up in Tacoma. He and Burt Baskin were brothers-in-law. He ate three or four scoops a day. His favorite: Jamoca almond fudge.

Selections from Baskin-Robbins’ Fun Facts:

-Famous former Baskin-Robbins scoopers include presidential candidate and Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
-Howard Hughes once became quite fond of Baskin-Robbins Banana Nut ice cream, so his aides tried to purchase a bulk shipment for him. Sadly, they discovered the flavor had been discontinued. They put in a request for the smallest amount the company could provide for a special order, 350 gallons (1,300 Liters). It was shipped from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, where Hughes lived at the time on the top floor of the Desert Inn. That’s the hotel he bought after they tried to evict him. A few days after the order arrived, Hughes announced he was tired of Banana Nut and only wanted French Vanilla ice cream. The Desert Inn ended up distributing free Banana Nut ice cream to casino customers for a full year until the 350 gallons were gone.
-Sean “Diddy” Combs got his first break by starring in a Baskin-Robbins commercial at the age of two.
-Throughout the years, we’ve honored important American events and cultural trends by introducing premium ice cream flavors, such as Lunar Cheesecake, Sesame Sweet, Beatle Nut and Green Monster Mint. [Who—or WHERE—is this Green Monster???]

I don't think I'd want to eat something called "Beatle Nut."

This post reminds me of my Jew. Who the hell goes out of their way to know Orange Julius's entire fucking history?

Couldn't they have just purchased the banana nut recipe and made it themselves?

Their German Chocolate Cake is absolutely divine. Thank goodness it's only available during the fall/winter months or I'd weigh 500 pounds.

I heard that Obama used to give ice cream to Reverend Wright for free.

I'm guessing the Green Monster Mint has to do with the Red Sox winning the series in 2004.

Also - I know it was a joke but I would think his ice cream scooping days were in Hawaii.

BTW - I highly doubt Hillary/Bush/McCain ever held a job like that - some elitist

"...his ice cream scooping days were in Hawaii."

So are you saying that Obama flew the Reverend Wright to Hawaii (using welfare money) to give him ice cream? Or did he ship the ice cream to Illinois using company funds?

Either way, it smacks of elitism and racial preference. Just the sort of thing a Muslim would do.

You don't depart a mortal coil. You shuffle off it.

He ate 3 or 4 scoops a day and lived to age 90. Unhealthy eaters of the world rejoice!

*yay*

Gawd! some of my finest youth memories when I worked at a B&R
I have a zillion funny ass stories from there.
one mentally challenged guy came every day - never missed a day. he would pace along the cases asking question upon question about various flavors - 10, 15 mins later he'd always pick chocolate aaallllmond. I used to pace back and forth with him eagerally, happily answering all his questions offering the little spoon of taste - after a week I caught on quit that. I would just chill by the choc almond case till he went thru his process. prolly had to be there but it was hee-sterical.
my childhood best pal (friends for 30 yrs now) hand I had ratty apt together right after high school, we were too poor to buy food. If we didn't go home to mom for a meal or have a date feed us - we lived on the 2 free scoops I got at the end of every shift - lost alot of weight!
