I know someone from my homestate of Ohio who wasn't openly gay when we grew up but then moved to Salt Lake City - at the time, I thought it was crazy of him. But there must be some secret something there. What is it?

Gay Pride day in salt lake is often as big as or bigger than the one in Portland. It's a pretty gay mecca, since there are huge swaths of anti-gay land around (southern utah, nevada, parts of colorado, wyoming). Go utah!

AS a Utahn born and raised (but now properly living on the left coast), I have to say that Salt Lake City specifically, but more generally Salt Lake County is somewhat progressive. SL City has a domestic partner registry, has full equal benefits for LGBTs (and have had them for almost a decade), an openly gay state senator, and an openly lesbian state house member. As Kate mentioned, the pride celebration (being held next weekend) is pretty large. There is a very visible gay community here. So while I don't think Utahns are quite ready for gay marriage, don't be doggin on the island of pretty blue progressive politics that is Salt Lake City...After all the former mayor lead the anti-war/impeach Bush rallies as Mayor, and just held another one today.

you used Pacific Standard Time - we are now on Pacific Daylight Time, which is one hour earlier than PST, which is what we have during the winter.

While it's kind of fun to mess with an online poll by voting from outside the area, the reality is that the Mormon Church -- as they have with every other gay-rights fight in this country -- will be pumping hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars into the November ballot initiative in California, outside of THEIR area.

@BobN: The Mormon church certainly does not see California as outside their area. There are more Mormons in California than in Utah, by a substantial margin!

The Mormon church recently had a significant turnover in leadership. It will be interesting to see if the church gets as involved in the California ballot initiative this November as it did with Proposition 22 back in 2000. Its rather aggressive involvement back then was a source of major frustration and irritation to many Mormons I know, both gay and straight.

I wonder if they'll announce the results on their live broadcast?

Eric mentioned Utah has a gay state senator and a lesbian state House member. Actually, Utah has two lesbian House members. Utah is one of only a few states with three openly gay legislators, the most anywhere in the nation.

I hate to see states reduced to a few stereotypes. It's easy to assume you know what Utah is all about. It's also easy to be very wrong.

Umm, not to put a damper on all the festivities, but in 2004 Utah changed it's State Constitution to ban gay marriage.
