SL City has a domestic partner registry, has full equal benefits for LGBTs (and have had them for almost a decade), an openly gay state senator, and an openly lesbian state house member. As Kate mentioned, the pride celebration (being held next weekend) is pretty large. There is a very visible gay community here. So while I don't think Utahns are quite ready for gay marriage, don't be doggin on the island of pretty blue progressive politics that is Salt Lake City...After all the former mayor lead the anti-war/impeach Bush rallies as Mayor, and just held another one today.

There are more Mormons in California than in Utah, by a substantial margin!

The Mormon church recently had a significant turnover in leadership. It will be interesting to see if the church gets as involved in the California ballot initiative this November as it did with Proposition 22 back in 2000. Its rather aggressive involvement back then was a source of major frustration and irritation to many Mormons I know, both gay and straight.
