City Fremont to Appeal City’s Dump Plan
posted by May 1 at 10:00 AM
onThe Fremont Neighborhood Council plans to appeal the city’s decision to move forward with a rebuild of the North Transfer Station, Seattle’s north end dump.
The city wants to modernize the aging facility, but neighbors in Fremont are upset about what they say is a lack of proper city process. Neighbors don’t believe the city took the time to fully assess other sites and they want the city to look at moving the dump to alternative locations in Ballard or Interbay.
The Council has until May 8th to file their appeal.

Oh, for chrissake. It's ALREADY THERE.
Neighborhood councils that bring these kind of bullshit appeals should be permanently disbanded and the members barred from any contact with any city official -- they should make them move the fuck away.
this city should just be renamed nimbyism.
Nimby County, WA
Please move this necessary facility that we all use to a poorer neighborhood, where it belongs.
Yeah. Appeal that decision. Tie it up for months. Or better yet, years. That way they can enjoy the stinking aging dump for longer, rather than modernizing it and cleaning it up. Brilliant plan, Fremont.
Fuck you, Fremont. Your tantrum won't make Mommy give you what you want, it just annoys everybody else.
I think they should move it. They can convert the land to low income housing and spare Discovery Park (which is used by many more people then the local wealthy).
Of course, Fremont would probably bitch about that too.
Are you under the impression that only wealthy people use this transfer station? EVERYBODY uses it.
I don't get why there's an uproar over renovating the place. I've also seen the biggest rats ever crawling around that place. Nasty.
Has anyone else noticed how freakin' friendly the staff there are? They've got the nastiest job, but they are super nice and chatty when you roll up with your junk. Maybe there's bong hits involved...
....move a dump? I realize it's not a landfill, but... really?
I don't even see what the issue is, other than to facilitate compulsive whining. The place is barely noticeable. I used to drive by it all the time and didn't even realize what it was until I had to use it.
And fuck, it's barely even *in* Fremont proper! It's in fracking Wallingford if you ask me.
NEIMNBY: Not Even In My Neighbor's Backyard
Every time anybody brings up garbage collection all I can think about is that my neighbor's micro trash can is smaller than my micro trash can. And it's like week after week they put it out there on the curb, flaunting it in front of everyone on the block. Making us look like, you know, maybe we don't produce as much garbage as some people but obviously we could do better. I mean sure maybe Seattle Public Utilities has better things to worry about than if they are giving some mirco-can subscribers smaller cans than others, but fuck. This is bullshit. It's like for all our neighbors know we could be throwing away truckloads of styrofoam packaging and lunchables wrappers, what with this obviously greater than 12 gallons can we have to use. Of course it's not a competition to have the smallest can, obviously. But it is a comparison, isn't it? People see, people compare. People come to conclusions about you.
If you were referring to my post Fnarf, I think you missed my point. I was just saying that the discourse of the use of Discovery Park for low income housing only seemed to be centered on what the rich folks next door feel when it really belongs to everybody, like the transfer station and the land it's on.
@1 - no, this is a large EXPANSION of the dump, to include toxics and other caustic recycling.
It would help if you read the city bulletins, Fnarf.
#11, you should paint your garbage can black, and on each side of it, paint a picture of a yet smaller garbage can. Not the cleverest thing in the world, but it's a subtle "piss off" to the neighbors you could pass as either art, or vandalism, depending whether there's a fine involved.
Also, speaking of Fremont and transfer stations - will someone please haul away that metalwork crap that's been sitting in front of those lofts all these years? Last time I looked, it actually seemed attached. That can't be right?
