Dept. of Surreptitious Fattening

posted by on May 21 at 17:25 PM

A former barista for the small coffee shop chain Starbucks has come forward and admitted to switching whole milk for skim when making caffeine cocktails for the Olsen twins… “The barista thought the Olsens were too thin, so whenever they ordered their usual drink, he would replace the skim milk with full-fat,” said a source. What a nefarious, strangely philanthropic plot.

Every time I see one of those Olsen things I picture them running around an organ grinder with a tin cup.

I'm more surprised they don't have people going to Starbucks for them.

@1 I used to do the same thing to strung out business people when I worked at one of the SBs at the airport.

@3, how else would they get looked at?

You give people what they order...even if the people in question do need some fattening up, you don't presume to know what's best for someone else...
My son has a lot of food allergies. People like to give him milk because "it's healthy" and "all kids need milk" even though it then makes him sick. Thanks, people...

I gave people something approximating what they ordered, as far as I know. I lasted two months, only weekends.

@1 The giving cops decaf trick is pretty common. And sanctioned by a few of the managers. Chalk another up for passive aggressive Seattlites! I never did it, but I didn't have any cops in my store. I did give an old lady a regular refill, and felt bad, but it was a mistake.

@4 whole v skim milk wouldn't change an allergy. Ordering soy gets you soy.

They should have dropped a stick of butter in.

It doesn't matter what they ate or drank ... I'm sure they purged it out afterwards anyway.

So the barista has a God complex and the Olsen twins are anorexics. It sounds like they all need help.
You give people what they order! You do not get to decide what is best for the other person.
The guy just admitted he's a control freak! Yuck.

Small?

Dude, I drink non-fat always. Whole, 2% and sometimes 1% upset my digestion. Not cool to switch. Moreover, I can almost smell a drink made with fuller fat. I definitely tast it on the first sip. So, really it's not like you can sneak that by someone.

Oh yeah, and I second Matt's comment.

@7 - yah, I know...was remarking more on the sanctimonious "I know better for you" people who, for example, give the Olsens full fat or, another example, give my son real dairy.

I was working at a downtown Seattle's Best Coffee when John Carlson was running for governor. One afternoon a big group of his supporters came in waving their campaign signs and generally being loud and obnoxious. They made a big deal about not knowing how to order coffee drinks but they all decided to get four-shot 20 oz. flavored lattes because they wanted to "go crazy" and stay up all night. So I used decaf shots, put in loads of sugar-free syrup and burned the milk.

Whole milk makes the accompanying lunch of 1/4 c. almonds and 1/2 c. tamari-rice crackers way too heavy.

There's no way someone doesn't notice their latte is made with whole milk instead of their usual skim. You can tell from the very first sip. I don't believe this story for a minute.

Jane, I believe the story. You see, I used to date one the twins (though I never knew which one, they kept switching on me). Every time I picked one of them up in the morning 1/2 an hr after they finished their espresso they would become all farty and complain about gas. Def made me not want to hit that. So thanks a lot barista!

Whole milk won't make you any fatter than skim, in fact probably the opposite. The fat slows down the rate the maltose spikes your glycemic index.

Now substituting sugar vanilla flavor for sugar-free vanilla flavor: that might make a gradual difference.

I used to give Dan Savage Ginger Apricot tea instead of Ginger peach tea....

The ongoing (thus far extraordinarily successful) experiment authored by Howard Schulz to discover how much people will actually pay for a cup of coffee continues. Or how to strengthen your memory muscle by reciting exactly what goes into your more-complicated-than-Jewish-dietary-law cuppa PC in a green dessert cup.
