Slog - Comments on Deborah Senn Takes It to the Stage

I'm so excited about this I could poop: In a year bursting with politics see the action from the inside! Come see the hilarious and poignant story of the successful effort of evil outside interests to capture and control Washington’s 2004 race for attorney general. Written and performed by former Insurance Commissioner and Democratic nominee for attorney general Deborah Senn. Not all ex-politicians are put out to pasture—come see it to believe it. I'm not kidding about my excitement. I think all elected officials should be required to do one-person shows, and not just the ones who'll probably be...

I've read this show, and it is excellent. Fascinating, funny and a bit heartbreaking. It made me ashamed how unconsciously influenced I am by negative political ads. Since reading her show a few years ago and talking to her about it, I have made conscious changes in how I absorb political campaigning. A show that actually changed me - rare!

I haven't seen Senn perform so I can't speak to that, but she is a cool person. I'm a fan.

I note with keen interest how she has edited the Horsey cartoon...leaving out the punch line entirely; which is that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in attempting to take her out, actually took out her opponent.

Wasn't Senn the one who made a big splash about fining Blue Cross for their arbitrary rate hike in the mid 90's, only to quietly reduce the fine to almost nothing and allow the rate hike to stand? I know I lost my coverage because of that move. Seems like there was also a matter of a donation from an insurance lobby group to her next campaign.

I spoke to Deborah Senn a few times when she was Insurance Commissioner, and I was always impressed at how forthright she was, especially when compared to other high-level elected officials (who tend to weigh every word coming out of their mouth like it could be going on their gravestone). Health insurance inequity always gets lots of lip service during legistlative sessions, but she struck me as someone who was truly passionate about making health insurance accessible and affordable to all. I'm excited to see this show.

This post surprised me. I met Deborah Senn in 2000 when she was running (and losing) in the Senate primary against Maria Cantwell. She seemed like an intelligent woman, but had the personality of a potato. I could picture her as an Insurance Commissioner, but not as a Senator. So, my mind is blown that she's now doing a one-person stage show.

@7: Whiny Deb is indeed a spud, but she also has the most annoying speaking voice in Washington politics. I'll go to this show only after they cast somebody else as Senn.

I swear to god I was going to post a comment about Cheryl Chow loving hot links--I don't see how it's off-topic here. If she were to do a one-woman show, surely she would discuss her tenure at GHS (a nightmare for us all) and her love of the intercom system there. It was her favorite way to communicate with the student store.
