But Has the Candidate Ever Had Gray Salt Caramels?

posted by on May 27 at 10:15 AM

From the bottom of that Reggie Love story Eli posted:

As Senator Barack Obama’s body man, Reggie Love makes sure the candidate has plenty of the things he likes — and makes note of those things he would rather avoid.

Here is a partial list, provided by Mr. Love.

[likes]
¶ Planters Trail Mix: Nuts, Seeds & Raisins
¶ Roasted almonds
¶ Pistachios
¶ Water
¶ Dentyne Ice
¶ Nicorette
¶ MET-Rx chocolate roasted peanut protein bars
¶ Vegetables, especially broccoli and spinach
Handmade milk chocolates from Fran’s Chocolates in Seattle

[avoids]
¶ Mayonnaise
¶ Salt and vinegar potato chips
¶ Asparagus (“if no other vegetables are available, he’ll eat it”)
¶ Soft drinks (he prefers water)

Hopefully this won’t start a run on Fran’s. As a side note, I gotta say, there’s something wrong with a man who doesn’t like salt and vinegar potato chips. Maybe Obama wouldn’t appreciate gray salt caramels after all.

Maybe he likes salt-and-vinegar chips too much, and doesn't want to balloon to the size of Al Gore.

Agree with tsm. It looks like the diet of a guy desperately trying to hold himself together on the campaign trail.

I read an article a few weeks ago comparing HRC and Obama's food likings. Obamas included mostly this list with the addition of Fiji water. HRC's was pizza and beer.

What didn't take long. There's already video up of Hillary eating a whole godamn bag of salt and vinegar chips wearing a trucker hat. Is she dipping them in mayonnaise and Pepsi? Gross.

Salt and vinegar chips are nasty. Kettle's Spicy Thai chips are where it's at.

I'm with him on mayonnaise.

I'm with him on mayo and soft drinks (excepting good ginger ale), but I'm suddenly concerned that I can't vote for a man who doesn't like salt & vinegar chips or asparagus.

Mayonnaise = Sandwich lube. Yuck.

I'd be with him on mayonnaise in a heartbeat.

Not a fan of the salt and vinegar chips myself. Salty, caramel chocolate is delicious. Very different tastes.
I can understand why people don't like mayo, but I cannot fathom my life without it.

Salt and vinegar chips taste like battery acid to me. Nasty, metallic things. I like my potato chips lightly salted.

I ate at Otto in New York last week, and my beloved ricotta gelato was gone. What was in its place? Salty Caramel gelato. Salty Caramel has taken over everything.

@1 is right. Besides, those BBQ chips are foul.

Nicorette !!!?

Well, sure, change is hard, but come on...

@15 -- did you see the video clip of Obama offering a Nicorette to a reporter who was trying to quit? He had at least eight of them in his pocket. I think he lives on them.

I admit it -- my first thought while reading the story this morning was that there would be a run on the grey salt caramels, and that I'd better stock up.

mayonnaise is not gross. here's a mayonnaise recipe:
2 egg yolks
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon powdered mustard
1/8 teaspoon sugar
Pinch cayenne pepper
4 to 5 teaspoons lemon juice or white vinegar
1-1/2 cups olive or other salad oil
4 teaspoons hot water

CATSUP is gross. it has CORN SYRUP in it. fucking foodie elitists.

Homemade mayo is yummy. And mayo-based food (pimento cheese, egg salad) is even yummier with homemade mayo.

I'm glad to see that Barack eats well, even on the campaign trail.

I discovered an un-opened box of Fran's gray salt caramels in my pantry this weekend, it was a happy, happy day.

Well, this list seals the deal for me, I cannot support a candidate that chooses milk chocolate over dark chocolate.

Psst, I heard if he's elected he's going to ban mayo and soft drinks.

Elenchos @4: At the risk of sounding gullible, is there really such a video? I want the link! And don't just send me to photos of her hoisting a mug or a shot glass - I've seen plenty of those.

Maybe he knows he should eat dark chocolate, but just loves milk chocolate?

After all, most chocolate in Hawaii used to be milk chocolate when he was growing up there.

@21

Unfortunately, sometimes I stretch the truth for dramatic effect. But stay tuned: Hillary will exploit this one way or another.

I for one will be grateful if she merely underscores his effete snack preferences and doesn't muse that Obama surrounds himself with large, scary black men.

He probably avoids the asparagus because it makes things taste funny.
and he obviously wants little snacky things to occupy his hands since he quit smoking.

yay on the mayo hate. and as for asparagus, well, more for me!
