Bush does not really plan on leaving the White House in January: He will start WWIII and declare martial law...especially if it looks like McCain will loose in November.

We can't attack Iran. We don't have a military anymore.

Is it really too late to IBOTMFA?

We do, however, have cruise missiles, stealth air-to-ground attack aircraft and bombers.

An air-based attack on Iran, without any plan for the aftermath or ground troops, would be profoundly irresponsible. Has that ever deterred Bush or Cheney?

If the decider decides to do bomb what, beyond a coup by the Joint Chiefs, can stop him?

@5 is correct, and King George is Mad.

And Prince Cheney is even more insane.

Can we just air-drop Bush and Cheney into Iran? I'll personally buy them each a flak vest, a helmet, and a .45. Go get 'em, cowboys.

I would hope that our allies, including those who supported us in Iraq, would make it very clear that they will not support this one. I'd like to see a statement by Gordon Brown that he will recall the British ambassador if we do this.

In case you missed it, this whole story was generated by folks within the Israeli government who are using the media to pressure W to attack Iran. The fact that they don't think it will backfire is a scary statement about what is even considered politically possible these days.

The line of reasoning being, "Well we're paying the Navy and the Air Force to just sit in the Persian Gulf. As long as they're on the clock ..."

We are unable to occupy the countries we already invaded, much less a new one. However, the US retains the ability to bomb the bejeezus out of any country on the planet.

The truly paranoid take on this (and who can be blamed for paranoia at this point?) is that any action against Iran might be part of an "all-in" strategy -- forcing the entire country onto a war footing by setting off WWIII "unintentionally."

This kind of shit makes me long for the days when all we had to fear was "toe-to-toe nuclear confrontation with the Russkies." Hard to believe that the Regan/Breznev era would be something to look upon with fond memories.

@12 - russia still has several thousand nuclear warheads. meanwhile we encircle them further with the ABM system and lie about it. food for thought.

iran's part of the PNAC endgame, though hopefully there isn't enough support down the ladder for executing those plans. it's shit like fallon getting forced to resign that makes people worry, or carrier group movements in and out of the gulf for the last few years, but then nothing happens...or will it? one wonders if cheney will shit or get off the pot.
