Regardless, this election cycle has engaged a LOT of people like nothing before.

Now I must go have dinner, and then bed. We "exter midwesterners" get tired early.

Tonight on KOMO 4 news: Reports from the pits of hell say that the river beds are starting to solidify, and snow is developing in the lower pits. In other news, Erica C. Barnett has conceded a point...

Wait. Current reports says that ECB did not concede, but merely said that Hillary should drop out. But, still claims that the fight has been good for the democratic party. And, Hell is warming back up to a nice toasty boiling point.

I still love you Erica, even if you're giving up on her. I'm still rooting for her to go all the way to the floor though.

Good for you, Erica. While I don't necessarily understand why you held on this long, I do salute you for caring so much.

ECB has opinions—and convictions. And she defends them! The HORROR!

Wholly shit! I never saw this coming! Who would have thought ECB would concede before Hillary?

I need to go pour myself a drink.

Many people have convictions and opinions and defend them, and yet ECB seems to get a lot more grief.

Why do you think that is?

I agree.

I liked Obama's speech, plus he is doing way better than expected in NC and in IN.

Here's what I liked:
signs he's getting more presidential.

1. Gracious to HRC and talking about party unity a lot. Good!

(btw: congratting her on IN -- a tiny example of what I mean when I say he should seat FL and MI. Give ground, show strength, build unity.)

2. He was more specific about the what's he going to do. Like the focus on real people, linking that to policy and the future.

3. He acknowledged the big state argument by arguing he won one. A note of electoral college realism. He needs more of it.*

4. He used the Wright negativity stuff to pivot back effectively (for the first time that I've heard him) and talked about how that whole technique is how they distract us from solutions. Getting back to his message.

Anyway main point is joy to the Obama supporters congrats & felicitaciones yes HRC should concede.

And as before....the more open he looks to her as VP the more quickly her support will deflate and drain away ....
______
*the MSNBC boys say his electoral strategy is to forego OH and FL and make it up with VA and CO so he doesn't need her on the ticket. That is dumb. Why forego OH and FL?

And anyway he doesn't need any help to win VA or CO having him at top of the ticket is enuf (and if he picks a lamm or a webb he gets a tiny bit of help but only in one state; if he picks HRC he gets lots of help in lots of states, instant megaunity, waves of unity/amazement stories ....all dipsutes between them are settled by her saying yup he is the boss.....)

My condolences to Erica. Transit advocate that she is, I know how it must kill her to see this nomination go to a man who:

  1. Not only stood up to the despicable cheap-gas pander but used the issue to challenge the American people (and ultimately used it to his advantage).
  2. Has proposed investing in high-speed inter-city rail as a way to revitalize our cities.
  3. Has spoken on the stump about the value of mass transit as an alternative for people who can't afford high gas prices, even specifically mentioning light rail.
  4. Has made it clear that the cap-and-trade system he has proposed to combat climate will be no free lunch.

Despite all this, I know how it must kill Erica to see this nomination go to this man. Because, well, because he is a man.

Hillary Clinton made this campaign all about XY chromosomes vs. XX chromosomes, poor people vs. rich people, regular people vs. smarty-pants elitists. Us vs. them. And Erica lapped it up.

For me, as a transit activist, I had to vote for Obama. But for me as someone who subscribes to the Walt Whitman, Emma Lazarus, Abraham Lincoln vision of a united, humble, diverse America--an America that, despite all its differences, is still an us--I have a much deeper reason to celebrate tonight.

We'll see what gets posted later/tomorrow, but if that is the extent of ECB's concession, consider me impressed by its graciousness. I would have expected some snarkier/nastier comments; very happy to be proved wrong.

I agree. Erica is far from homely, not that it matters. And I think she's done an excellent job articulating her positions, and the predictable haters are contemptible little worms. And the only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner, so chill.

What's different about today? Some said she should've dropped out a month ago, two months ago, seventeen years ago. What is the actual empirical evidence that her staying or not staying in the race does or doesn't do to the democrats, jebus or whatever her not conceding was supposedly doing. I mean, it just seems to me that people decided she should concede based on a plethora of surrogates of nothing.

Erica dear, don't you listen to those mean people. You come here and sit by your Auntie Catalina, who is very proud of you, even if she did disagree with you on the whole Clinton thing.

And I've said it before, and not that it matters, but Erica is a very pretty person. I'd say girl, but I don't want to get her angry. And "woman" sounds so unladylike.

I liked Clinton up until a few months ago when she showed that she valued her own interests ahead of the party and the country. When the contest was still that, I thought, though I was an Obama supporter, that she should campaign and try to win. She seemed like a good candidate.

Its too bad that she was not able to be gracious in defeat. It has ruined her image in the minds of people who might have thought her a great senator, possible VP, and even a possible president in 2016.

I feel bad for her supporter,s but at this point, I would just prefer to never see her again.

oooh! all this talk about what she LOOKS like! that ought to get her feminist panties into a fine bunch indeed. as it should. btw, speaking as a straight woman, she looks ok enough to me. attractive, i think.

Even though I am a big Obama supporter, I am hoping that Erica was right that this was good for the party (by registering a bazillion new voters, for one thing)...

But it only will have been a good thing if Obama supporters don't act like they just won the general election and get all snide.

The time that the party is MOST at risk to fall apart wasn't during the race, but right afterwards when the supporters of the loser feel let down and nonsupporting of the winner.

Anyways, cheer up, ECB. You could get to vote for the first African-American president. He supports more federal funding for mass transit! He has a 100% NARAL record and a 100% Planned Parenthood record! Things could be so much worse.

Posted by tsm | May 6, 2008 7:45 PM

Dan... ECB may be misguided and deluded (people with vaginas often are) but I really don't think its necessary (or helpful) to call her a Whore-er...

I don't think this is good news at all.

A lot of my, um, my friend's fantasies are dependent on ECB standing for all that is wrong in the world. Isn't a healthy fantasy life important? And so if you're fantasizing about someone berating you with polemics that are wrong in every way, it is healthier if they are actually wrong in every way, right? So it is more likely to actually happen rather than being totally nuts. Not that I'm saying it will actually ever happen. To him. But this just moves it further outside the realm of possibility.

And so as you can imagine the poor guy is feeling like he's lost something here. Maybe I'll cheer him up by suggesting she will feel all the more contempt for him and his disgusting ECB-abuse scenarios because of his pathetic whining about her. I'll say she is calling him repulsive as we speak, perhaps. Writing his name and crossing it out over and over and over. Something like that.

i'm glad to hear this from erica because i'm glad she will put her energy behind supporting obama fully now. sore winners are lame.

Posted by infrequent | May 6, 2008 8:03 PM

aw. I concede that she isn't going to win, but she should take it (gently) to the convention just like every other candidate in her position has done. If contesting the race in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Montana helps to win just one of those states in the general it will be worth it.

ECB's hot, especially when she's angry. That's why this news disappoints me so; I'd rather look at angry Erica than sad Erica.

Hilary is that party guest that won't take the hint it's time to leave even though you've turned off the music and undimmed all the lights and are sweeping the hardwood. At least ECB left when all the good booze ran out.

I'm no fan of Hillary (too much Rove Republican play-acting, especially lately), and as one who routinely disagreed with ECB, I find the sheer hatefulness and venom (not to mention rank misogyny) of many of the comments of my fellow Obama supporters to be very distressing. Please cool it and try recognizing that your enemy is a human being, that's all.

Christ - I hope none of you Hillary-demonizers ever have a mother, a daughter, a sister, a niece, or a wife running for president with her own ideas, her own agenda, her own period, her own hair-dos, her own clothes, her own high IQ, her own fallible husband, and her own sense of who she is and finally her own inability to way "aunt" when that's what you want because - whinily - you just Want. It. To. Be. Over.

You are exuding such a rank aroma of inevitability about this, and yet in my own head, I know you will not work very hard to help Obama beat McCain because you've already done your part by being an idolator.

If you think Obama will beat McCain just because of some self-fulfilling prophesy you've dreamt up, go to the Clue Club and buy a couple - you're gonna need 'em.

rhett oracle, your entire comment is the most cliched liberal vagina comment on slog I've ever seen. And you reek of sour grapes over the personal failure you feel because your candidate lost. Just because your candidate was a loser doesnt make you a loser by association.

Fuck Hillary and fuck you Erica.

You subjected everyone to such loads of bullshit for so long over this race that I hope you are depressed. You should be. It is the natural reaction to the sudden realization that you have been a complete tool.

Fnarf,

I really don't care what ECB looks like, and I don't pretend that it's relevant to her arguments.

@42, I think a lot of us who were excited about having a woman tunning for president are probably among the most disappointed with her. And no its not because she is too manly. Its because she has thrown every dirty trick at Obama, made threats to Pelosi, and refused to accept that she lost.

I would love a woman president, but not one who is as underhanded as Rove and apparently shares a lot of policy positions with McCain.
