My little pony go bye-bye.

LOL. Awww. Why did Clinton have to condemn that horse to death. Karma is a heinous bitch that never passes on a chance to make a point. I blame this shit on Big Sven and his idiot ilk for making the universe suffer the affront of a possible Clinton presidency.

And the horse that won is named.... "Big Brown."

Perhaps this is an example of the folly of betting on someone based on nothing other than the person's gender.

Sad face for the horse, no sympathy for Hillary.

This has got to be the greatest SLOG I've seen in ages! Does a horse race imitate life? Or does life imitate a horse race?

off topic here, but is anyone else having trouble with cell phone reception this afternoon i'm in ballard and was downtown earlier... i'm on at&t and my boyfriend (who is on t-mobile) are not getting any "bars" and no phone calls coming in or out....
anyone else having this problem this afternoon?

Jesus, that is the saddest thing I've heard in a while. And it reminds me why I really hate any "sport" that involves animals.

If Kobe Bryant broke both his ankles and was euthanized on the court, that would be OK - at least he was choosing to play.

Hillary Spin:
The Filly put up a good fight...she went all the way. During the she was injured...and needed immediate health care like the kind I'm going to give all Americans once I'm President. Sadly the injures were sever and she has to be put down. We fight the hard fight in memory of this triumphant horse who gave it her all in a race dominated by men.

Hillary's campaign won't have to spin anything. The media won't ask her any difficult questions, and her campaign certianly won't bring it up. They'll just ask Obama about lapel pins and comments he didn't make instead . . .

If Erica was spinning this she'd be telling us that the filly should be given first place because she had momentum going into the final post, even though Big Brown edged her by a nose in the end.

The quote from the jockey in the Louisville paper is also worth noting.

“I tried to get her to stop,” he said. “I tried to get her to stop, but she wouldn’t stop.”

Fuck people who exploit animals for entertainment. The Hillary thing is ironic to be sure, but the real schadenfreude for me is that all the assholes who crowded their families into the racetrack to witness this barbaric spectacle had to watch a champion racehorse get euthanized on the spot.

Another pressing issue the mainstream media and the campaigns will fail to address - the outcome of a fucking horse race.

Posted by umvue | May 3, 2008 5:37 PM

Emily - have you spent much time with horses? Seen them in the pasture? Seen them play with each other - race each other in the fields? Ever spent much time with a thoroughbred in particular?

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I am questioning whether you know even close to as much about horses or horse racing as you think you do.

She also finished second in Guam.

#15, the jockey tried to get her to stop *after* the race. Reminds me of this joke from the Daily Show's Obama interview:

Do you have a concern that you could win the nomination at the Convention and defeat John McCain in the general and, you know, go to the inauguration and Hillary would still be running?

Superstitious sloggers of the "Clinton is destroying the Democratic Party" variety should note that she did not bring any other horses down with her.

In a development that you couldn’t even make up, Eight Belles finished second, but broke both her ankles during the race, collapsed at the end, and was immediately euthanized on the track.

Um, broke BOTH her ankles? Don't horses have four?

Posted by NaFun | May 3, 2008 7:33 PM

There is no need to have ever seen a horse or learned anything about animal blood sports such as horse racing to know it is cruel. Not a blood sport? Tell that to Eight Belles.

The question is what justification is there to exploit these feeling, trusting animals in this horrific way? You don't need to be some kind of horse expert to ask that question. Justify horse racing if you know so much about horse racing.

Sure I know humans find it terribly entertaining. But you don't have to know a thing about horses to know that humans can be entertained in any number of ways. Play a game. Get drunk. Learn French. Masturbate. Whatever. If you really can't think of one single thing to occupy your spare time without hurting an animal, kill yourself. But please, please leave the animals alone.

No, they have two, one on each rear leg. They have fetlocks on their front legs.

@16- Normally, I'd agree with you. Animals aren't here for our own amusement and spectacle.

But horse racing is fine by me. Horses love running and competition, and you can sense at the races that the horses are enjoying themselves. There's no zoo-like feeling at all.

Fuck Clinton's spin, I can't wait to see how the Daily Show announces this...especially since the winning horse is 'Big Brown'.

Posted by mirror | May 3, 2008 9:19 PM

Horse racing is about as much of a "blood sport" by animals who "don't have a choice" as gymnastics performed by prepubescent girls is.

If racehorses didn't love running and winning, they wouldn't go fast, and they wouldn't win. Some don't love it, and they don't race - what would be the point of trying to make them? Others do, and they win, and sometimes they get hurt and die, too.
Like that marathon runner who dropped dead of a congenital heart condition mid-race during the Olympic trials.

Self-righteous people who decide what other animals think and feel about the world and then get their panties all in a twist about it crack me up.

Posted by Thisbe | May 3, 2008 9:48 PM

Yep. And when it turns out that horse wouldn't stop running because it was high as a kite, you'll say it's an aberration. You'll be shocked that anyone would sully the sterling honor of this noble sport with drugs. Fucking shocked.

Forcing young girls into gymnastics to feed the sick needs of adults is exactly what I'm talking about.

Get help people! Get help. Keep your hands off the little kids, keep your hands off the dumb animals, and get fucking help.

You people railing against training animals for entertainment probably EAT animals bred strictly for slaughter every day. Aside from races, I would argue almost all of these horses have it better than we do. They run a mile about a once a month for about 8 years and then they spend the rest of their lives fucking other horses. We should all be so lucky.

How very odd; no 50 paragraph spam-post from unPC yet. If I knew how to draw a goat inside a pentagram, I'd summon him myself. As it is, we'll have to let ECB do it.

That's what I figured elenchos - you know nothing of horses, have probably never ridden a horse, and have never spent time with them in a barn, paddock, or on the track. Horses run - that's what they do and they break down in pastures just as much as they do on the track, only on the track they get either medical attention or euthanized to end their suffering. The drugging of horses is and should be illegal and horse racing should do a better job to crack down on it, but horses break legs in all sorts of situations. Racing needs to do anything it can to minimize breakdowns, though they can never be eliminated. Race horses, by and large, are treated well and they run because they love to. Otherwise, that 114 pound man on the 1200 pound animals back isn't going to make a bit of difference.

Horses like to run... thoroughbreds more than others. The races aren't why they're breaking down, and they're not the barbaric practice in this picture.

The barbaric practice is running them at high speed on packed dirt tracks... at two years old. Horses aren't physically mature until at least four, sometimes five years depending on the animal.

Ban the racing of babies, not the racing of horses.

You're so totally right. The media is so focused on the stupid issues like the lapel pins, that they won't concentrate on the real issues that actually matter to Americans. Like, um, a horse. Named Eight Belles. And the extent of Hillary Clinton's involvement in KentuckyDerbyGate.

Shocked, yes, shocked am I at the mainstream media's criminal neglect of this issue! Surely nothing could be of greater importance to the people of our fine country Under God! We demand truth! TRUTH! The people! United! Can never be defeated!

@34

Ed, you wrote all that and still couldn't think of a justification for racing horses? And supposedly you know so much about it yet you have no good reason to keep doing it. Instead you want to talk about me, as if I were what mattered here.
