Slog - Comments on Yes I Did

Too busy with the movie reviews I put off in favor of caucus shenanigans and Seattle-to-Portland training to write much at the moment, but for those who are wondering: Yes, I'm a 43rd district delegate to the CD caucus. Thanks to those who voted for me! Anyone else make it to the next level? I sort of wanted to rip into Sean "Hussein" Astin, but then I perused his latest credits on IMBD and decided I couldn't really be mean to a man who most recently played something called Twoflower in an adaptation of a Terry Pratchett novel for British...

Thanks, Andy. I wouldn't say this has soured me on the process and it certainly doesn't diminish my enthusiasm for Obama at all, but speaking of the process - and no slight to those who were selected by it is intended - but was this really the best feasible way to winnow it down? 30-second speeches and sign-making? After waiting an irksome 3 1/2 hours (!!!) just so that the party officials could count how many people had signed in?

Congrats, Emily, and thanks for introducing yourself. I'm tentatively planning to run for one of the--what is it, 70% of 5?--coveted lady slots at the CD level, but it seems like a very long shot. Are you running?

Trey: Ditto, me and the 30th. It burns me that probably 80% of the people who got selected weren't even there when the vote came down. I kicked myself later for not arguing that the alternates should be picked from among those that were still there, instead of a delegate-runners-up selection (everyone else just wanted to go home instead of, you know, stick it out properly to the end).

How can you claim to be a suitable delegate (or alternate) if you can't commit to being present for the whole process? Yes, it went way late. Yes, everyone should have expected that. (Assembly noobs!)

Two people took the time to write up flyers for their candidacy. Neither of us were picked.

I didn't get it either but then again I didn't expect to -- in the 37th there were more than 200 people applyin to be an Obama delegate, and I am not nearly outgoing enough.

I was kind of thinking I had a shot at alternate, since so many people went home as the evening wore on. But then at the end everyone wanted to leave, so they just decided to take the next 19 vote-getters. Which was kind of annoying since many of those folks didn't stay around for 14 hours like I did... Anyway, I got some votes, but not enough, and I guess that's OK since I really need to write a thesis in the next few months anyway.

I didn't receive a call but found out I was an alternate via email/this list:

I'm grateful to those who stuck around to hear everyone out, and to those who voted for me!

I tended to vote for those who'd been active volunteers for Obama and/or progressive activists in their communities. It's disappointing to see that some of my favorites didn't make it through, like Anita Sena-Johnson, a Latina activist who put out an informative flyer about her work to improve education for immigrant and refugee children. I'd like to see the voting process improve next time, and make use of the internet to allow us to find out more about the candidates ahead of time. I'm sure we could organize to help any precinct delegates without net access gain it for this.

Congrats to Annie! I voted for you, and look forward to seeing you in Spokane.
