Obama himself brought this up when they hit him with it at the debate.

Not that any fact matters any more. Hillary won't quit after she wins a squeaker in Pennsylvania, but I don't think it will matter. She will become a joke and Obama can focus on what really matters.

This has been floating around since the debate.

I think the real issue here isn't about Clinton's connections, but more what McCain is going to make of this in his campaign against Obama. The problem is Obama seemed to downplay his relationship to Ayers, making it seem like he was just a guy in his neighborhood, when in reality the two are closer than that. So, I think McCain may gain some traction with the "if it's no big deal, why did he downplay the relationship" argument.

Weather Underground? Maybe we should start with convincing people that Obama isn't a Muslim!

If it's an issue for Obama v. McCain, then it will be an issue for Clinton V. McCain - well it would be if Clinton didn't have so many other negatives and larger issues. The point is that Obama has so few negatives McCain and Hillary have had to focus on trivial things like this they can dig up about Obama. Another pathetic dog from Hillary, who has proven to be a disgusting campaigner and at this point, pretty irrelevant. The question anymore isn't if Hillary is taking down Obama, because that doesn't appear to be happening, it's why is she taking down herself. Her negatives are going so high she no doubt will have an incredibly well funded and quality Republican opponent in her next big for the Senate. Bill has already ruined his legacy, now Hillary is threatening to ruin her's too. Sad.

All you Hillary supporters - grab a clue and encourage your candidate to stop - stop destroying the party, stop insulting the voters, stop trying to ruin our chances of winning in November, and stop destroying herself. Damned, it's about time for an intervention.

@4 I'm not arguing this wouldn't be an issue with Clinton vs. McCain, but I think most people on Slog feel that Clinton is done.

Given that, shouldn't we be willing to take an honest look at what McCain and his camp will be throwing at Obama? It would be nice to think that he could coast through the election unscathed and above all that, but that isn't reality.

Reality is the republicans have this kind of stuff and much more at the ready for Obama. Obviously they had stuff about Clinton too, but isn't that moot now?

And on a personal level, I'm tired of the fact that anyone who comments on Obama in anything other than glowing terms is automatically lumped in the hysterical HRC supporter camp. If I support Obama am I just supposed to suspend my critical thinking skills? As his own wife said, he's just a man. He has issues.

Right now it's easy to blame Clinton for absolutely everything, but when she isn't in the race anymore he's going to have to stand on his own. Unless everyone is going to continue to blame Clinton for every negative republican attack that's launched and every piece of dirty laundry the press digs up.

To make my point perfectly clear I am not arguing that the nomination should go to Clinton and I am not defending Clinton. I am making a point about an issue that Obama will have to face.

@6,

He seems to be handling Hillary's attacks pretty well. Unlike Kerry, Obama responds quickly to criticism. It remains to be seen whether his tactic of staying above the fray will help him or hurt him in the general election. I'm hoping that it'll help.

Apparently Hilary does need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

Yeah, your "guess what" hold less impact since Obama himself brought this up during the PA debate.
