You angling for a plaque of your very own, Paul?
I had a copy of D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths growing up, and it was great. We need more quality bookstores, especially because gigantic warehouses like Barnes & Noble never have what you're looking for.
It's cat abuse I tell you!
I checked the D'Aulaire's book out of the library so many times, the librarian stopped making me bring it in to renew it. I absolutely loved that book.
The Big Con is a great read -- especially for the real con man names, which I'll take over fictional hobo names any day.
The book was a big influence on Mamet, and before him on David S. Ward who wrote The Sting before he wrote Sleepless in Seattle.
In these days of Nigerian 419 scams, it's heartening to read about the men who really got to know their mark before fleecing them completely. Or, like the movies, just paid a high price of admission for the creation of some intense drama in their lives.
D’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths started a lifelong obsession with mythology for me. I love that book, and I agree, when I was little those illustrations strongly influenced how I drew.
Other D'Aulaire fans! (Swoon) I'm a bigger fan of the Norse Myths book, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. There's one picture of Balder that I swear is etched onto the inside of my eyelids.
And @1: Yes, I do think that I'll have made my mark as a book reviewer if I one day have a box of cat feces dedicated to me, but the one at Twice Sold Tales is already taken.
Agree about the d'Aulaires. I actually just returned from the library with a copy of their Norse Gods and Giants, which I'm starting to realize may have been the seed for my preference for all things strapping and/or bearded. Hm....
rude and snobby. I savor every dollar I spend at Powell's.
D’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths: one of the greatest books you can read to your child. I think there's a cd with the stories read by the likes of Paul Newman, Matthew Broderick, Kathleen Turner, and others.
Ya know, people who are allergic to cats aren't just persnickety about the smell. They're allergic to dander, and those cats are keeping them out whether you can smell it from a mile away or not.
I was just about to gush about the Norse Myths book! I remember images of Frost Giants that were out of this world. And maybe a picture of Bifrost, the rainbow bridge?
@7 Norse Gods and Giantswas reprinted a couple years ago as D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths with a forward by Michael Chabon. Different cover, same book.
Fnarf @ 11: I know it's not just smell, but this probably is the only weekend you can actually take a whole bunch of anti-allergy medication and browse there and make it out alive. Soon, it'll be a thick dusting of dander everywhere, rather than the light smattering of dander hither and yon.
And thank you @13 for the tip. I had no idea.
Oh my God. I read and re-read D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths as a child. Thanks for putting the idea back in my head! If I can't find a copy of my own, can I borrow yours?...
Twice Sold Tales is wonderful-- cat smell or not. I like being left alone to politely molest the cow cat and browse for hours. It sucks that it'll be closed by 10, but the employees probably appreciate it, and it's better for my bank account if I don't get tanked and go bookshopping.
I better get there quick - I hate having to always remember to pop a Claritin 2 hours before I visit the other Twice Sold Tales.
I went to the old store only once. I have the very mildest of cat allergies, but was nevertheless driven out of the place in about 15 minutes. Too bad, because it otherwise seems like just my kind of place. Maybe I'll give the new store a try before it gets buried under a new fog of cat dander. Failing that, I'll be making a pilgrimage to Powell's in about a month.
@17 I agree, being drunk and book shopping is dangerous. Every book seems like a must read and when I'm drunk I can never hear my credit card weeping.
@11: hey bubble boy, STFU.
dander? go buy some Benadryl! you doink.
So is PsychoChick still involved? She of the many cats and random personal affect?
we carry the book of norse myths in the kids' section of the u bookstore, paul. it's probably elsewhere, too, but i know we have it if you're looking.
I'm just happy people are reading. It gives me hope.
I'm deathly allergic to cats, and I duck into TST when I need a book, and I'm none the worse.
Yeah, it is nice, but why does it smell like used cats already? Can't they just throw out some of that old cat furniture and stuff? The cats seemed happy enough to me; they just needed baths and showers and such.
I never read the D'Aulaires' books when I was small, but only recently. That illustration of Orpheus playing his harp, and the animals and trees and rocks on the ground weeping, laid me out on the floor. Good find!
