The Most Unintentionally Hilarious News Lede of 2008

posted by on April 11 at 15:00 PM

The story of a dog whose front legs were broken by boys with a baseball bat near Klamath Falls may have a happy ending.

The 5-year-old blonde long coat Chihuahua named Heather underwent surgery this week and is expected to walk again.

Kenya Davidson and her roommate spotted the dog when they stopped at a bank ATM last month.

They also saw three boys, about 10 to 12, standing by the dog. One had a baseball bat. They ran.

Davidson took the dog to the Klamath Humane Society shelter.

Efforts to find the dog’s owner failed. But she will be available for adoption. Donations to cover her surgery are encouraged.

See, now if Kenya and her roommate were armed, justice could have been served here.

And what's so funny?

How would you have written it?

That sentence is utter shit and I hope everyone here immediately sees that.

Here, let me break it down for you:

The SUBJECT of a dog MODIFIER OF DOG MODIFIER OF HOW LEGS BROKEN MODIFIER OF WHERE LEGS BROKEN MODIFIER OF SUBJECT.

It's horrible: the modifier for "the story" comes at the VERY end, and "near klamath falls" comes after "baseball bat".

How would you have written it? I wouldn't have tried to cram so much shit into one sentence.

Oh, I thought it was funny cuz the dog is getting a "happy ending". I guess im the only immature one here.

So the writer and editor need a lesson in brevity. I wouldn't call this "unintentionally hilarious", or even "hilarious", except that it might be a slow newz day.

is the dog getting the happy ending? or is all of kalamath falls getting it? or is it the baseball bat that's near kalamath falls?

What exactly is unintentionally hilarious about this?

Thats all too smart for me to laugh at, just like Arrested Development.

I don't see anything funny about it except that it was a chihuahua. Would have also been funny with "poodle" or "cat" in there.

I suspect that dog would have been a whole lot happier if those bratty fucking kids hadn't broken its legs with a baseball bat. Even if it is just a glorified rat.

And yes, that is one of the most tortured sentences I've seen in quite a while. At least in a newspaper.

This is a very sad story. I hope that poor dog gets nothing but love for the rest of its life.

Those kids will be robbing your houses and raping your girlfriends soon. Good times...

If you don't stop using the word "lede" I will come down there and tear your throat out with my bare hands. All of you.

The suggestion that the dog's owner will be up for adoption is funnier. I wonder why she's having surgery?

Wow Jonah, you really uncovered a zinger there.

So glad to see no arguments. I was afraid what I said would cause a flame war...but it needed said. Chihuahuas and poodles aren't real dogs.
