Slog - Comments on The Fucking Bell In History

While reading Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy, this passage, which concerns the rules Catholic missionaries established for the education and civilization of Indians, appears and makes me wonder: I even recall one missionary used to ring a bell at midnight to remind the [Indians] to perform their marital duties. Because it would have never occurred to them to do so. This is twisted in so many ways. What kind of mind imagines natives who are so disorderly that they even need this instruction, this command: Now is the time to fuck?...

A sex-obsessed mind, who would probably then go tiptoeing around outside people's huts listening for the sounds of lovemaking, so he could "choke the bishop" under his robes.

Their marital duties imply a will to procreate. The bell ringing is there no doubt to remind them of this as they copulate. This is Hegel after all CM. Sex is aufgehobt into a divine teleogly by the ringing of the bell. Sex becomes conscious of itself as it understands itself in relation to the moral will. Without the bell sex is nothing at all.
