I grew up in Alaska. When I was a kid an eagle swooped down and flew off with our beloved family cat. Totally traumatized us. I always see them swooping circles over Capitol Hill and I wonder how many family pets have been lost to them in the city. It is kind of the last thing people might expect.

I love watching the eagles skim along 34th ave in Madrona grabbing the cats (the bunnies and squirles prove too fast) that constantly poop in the park.

I saw a Bald Eagle swoop down and take a fish out of Green Lake about ten feet in front of me once. BAM, hit the water and he was away again. Thought I was gonna die.

This hawk has been hanging around the Roy/Bellevue/Belmont area near Lake Union on the back side of Capitol Hill for a few months now. According to flyers that were up a few weeks ago, he's been making off with peoples' small dogs.

A friend's dad lives on Hood Canal outside of Belfair, and a few years ago there was a storm that knocked down a tree with an eagle's nest in it. When people went to look at the nest, they found 15 pet collars in it, sans pets.

And that's why my kitty is an indoor-only kitty!

Given that housecats kill something like 100 million songbirds each year (IIRC), it seems fitting that the birds get a little payback from time to time.

You know, it's too bad that in the real world there's never that ominous music just before something bad happens so you can prepare yourself.

@14 Yeah, I saw one do that once right in front of a boat I was in. I was awed by the precision with which the eagle managed to swoop down and grab the fish and then fly off again with it clasped in its talons.

That was STAGED as shit. Don't get me wrong - I'm guessing the filmmakers had heard this sort of thing occurs (I'm sure it does, um, like lemmings running off cliffs), but my money says those fuckers stuck that kid on an isolated shelf, set up the shot, and waited.

I do know this happens to cats as well (and apparently a small dog in Central Park a few years back) - but coyotes and owls (owls are fearless compared to so many wild animals), those are the real dangers to our furry little friends.

I saw some bald eagles bombing the Columbia off I-84 (82?) a few months ago, it was awesome.

@26 - definitely some footage was reused - the eagle swooping in for the last kid-grab was the same as for the first, although the fall of the kid was different. And the landing of the eagle and the kid in that valley looked a bit...edited. Still, that was great sound editing, and that first bit has completely scarred me.

I grew up in Kitsap, and a bald eagle once tried to carry off the neighbor's cat. The cat was exceptionally fat and the eagle was luckily not able to get it in the air. After that, she refused to come out of the garage for a week or two.
