Slog Happy May 8

posted by on April 29 at 16:54 PM

SlogHHmay.jpg

Two weeks until the next Slog Happy (put it on your calendar), and though the first five were well-attended and totally entertaining, it’s time to improve our monthly party. I’m sure you have ideas…

Readers who’ve never been: What’s keeping you away? Slog Happy regulars, how should we make it better and more inviting? Free hot dogs? I’m listening.

The only reason I haven't gone is it's on Thursday. That tends to be a problem.

OH, and I'm afraid of Mudede, but that's a minor point.

Oil wrestling. Fnarf vs. Will in Seattle! ECB vs. Annie! Dan Savage vs. a pit bull!

@1: Most of the Stranger staffers (esp. editorial) are secretly afraid of you guys, so everyone should just show up and have a good time.

I'm still in MN. Feeding my mom cigarettes while we watch The Weather Channel or The TV Guide Channel. Not that I'm bitter.

Slog Night: more staffers. Remember the name tags.

You should give us free (or $10) SLOG t-shirts with our user names on the back.

Mudede is a charmer in person, violet. I personally don't want to mud wrestle Fnarf, but either ECB or annie would be fun (or they could mud wrestle each other) ...

Pit bulls should be not seen unless on a very strong leash held by a very strong person of good moral standing who realizes how dangerous they are ...

And Amy is always a charmer in person (actually, both ECB and annie are too ...).

Obviously holding it in West Seattle would be an improvement.

Definitely a venue with food would make things better. There's only so much my empty stomach can take! Also, cabs to Jackson Park would be helpful.

Catalina Vel DuRay @ 6,

You should totally come; it's tons of fun meeting everyone IRL outside the digital world.

I can't make it this time 'cause I'm going out of town, but I'll definitely be back for June.

Greg @ 17,

Look on the bright side: An empty stomach just makes the alcohol work faster.

If you hold it in South Seattle(Portland), I'd show up. That's right.

Feats of strength, live slogged! For drinks, of course.

Oh, and you guys calling for the green tags? I hearby challenge you to wear them yourselves, and let the boys have at you.

If I were in Seattle that night I would totally come and thumb-wrestle ECB. She'd beat me, but dammit I'd put up a fight.

Trivia sounds fun. Or karaoke. (Not that I myself ever sing. Ever.)

Even to speak in jest of the pathetic red and green buttons makes me feel dirty.

I can't come because I don't live in Seattle and the Slog Happys (Slog Happies? Slogs Happy?) have been on days when I am not in town.

However, at this point, even if I was in town on one of the nights, I would be worried that now everybody already knows each other... and I don't comment often enough for people to be like, ooh, you're Julie...

Irena, Fnarf, Aislinn, and Mr. Poe can grab my package. Everyone else has to ask.

Maybe Rotate neighborhoods. I doubt anyone would trek to West Seattle, but if happy hour were in the north I would be more likely to attend, i know fnarf has expressed a similar desire.

a dance contest or karaoke. and yes, more name tags and staffers. nobody wants to grope my knockers, so red/green tags are moot. i'd like to bring cookies, though. anyone up for cookies? would moe allow that? i'd love to see hernandez and tsm mud wrestle. or w7ngman vs. original monique's honey!

The main hold up for me has been time. Starting just an hour or so later would work wonders for my schedule. But, what the heck, the time seems fine with enough others. (A venue with food would be a plus also.)

Why don't I show up? Because, for this Ballard-ite, having it on Capitol Hill is about a convenient as having it in Kent.

Moving it North would be nice, but I promise I would come if it was in Belltown (i.e. a single bus ride away, no transfer required).

You want food, you got it. We just opened Pike Street Fish Fry in the old Frites space. You can get all kind of great fish (Halibut, Skate, Mackerel, Oysters) fried. Along with some grilled fish like Octopus and others. There's Spanish Fries and fried Asparagus. Come check us out. We think you'll like it.

PS - Do it at the Rendezvous. Or the Lava. Or Shorty's (beer+pinball+Slog=fun).

What is keeping me away? Geography and unwillingness to travel. That could be overcome if the red/green button rule was enacted.

Also, free hot dogs? You'd have to have vegan soy dogs for anyone to partake.

I liked having a DJ last time, that was nice. I still want a themed debate. Trivia would be good. And food since I usually don't have time to eat before going and then I get really drunk too fast. :)

Please no karaoke.

slog themed trivia would be brilliant. aka, a question could be "what is the line that is automatically appended to every election post written by erica?" answer: "... and that is why hils deserves the nomination" etc. etc.

you should have a slog happy in the udistrict so that people who work here could come by after work. shultzy's has big booths and food. or wherever.

The DJ was cool, and I also think trivia would be fun. Karaoke is just asking for trouble, although if I may brag, you haven't heard "Sussudio" until you've heard me sing it.

@29 If tsm is down for it then I'll do it.

And switching neighborhoods once in a while sounds like a good plan too.

1)Slog Appreciation Night, (aka, Let's Get Aislinn and Mr Poe Drunk Night) could only happen on a Thursday, or perhaps a Wednesday. People have stuff to do on Fri/Sat/Sun and most bars are already busy and don't need the boost to business and wouldn't cut us any deals. Sun/Mon/Tues does NOT work for the Stranger 'cause they're putting that week's paper together.
2)The reason it happens on the Hill is because the Stranger is located on the Hill and it's convenient for the staff, who put this on out of the kindness of their little hearts (and the publicity), AND centrally located. About 4 people would turn up if you had it elsewhere...please quit whining about moving it to your neighborhood. I find it difficult to believe that you are unable to leave West Seattle/Northgate/Ballard for an evening's entertainment once a month. I don't own a car, AND I'm lazy as fuck, but somehow I manage to find a way to get to West Seattle or Fremont or Ballard when I really want to see a band or attend some kind of special event. BUT, perhaps one day, the Stranger might host a beachy, summer time event for Sloggers, (or perhaps something on Keck's luxury yacht), hint, hint...

As much as I like walking to Moe, it would probably help turnout to hold Slog Happy at a place where most people could get there without transfering.

Posted by w7ngman | April 30, 2008 10:12 AM
54

It has to be at Moe. Stranger staffer's parole bracelets won't let them leave Capitol Hill.

Posted by blank12357 | April 30, 2008 10:16 AM

Announce that ECB will be attending.

That should bring people in. ;)

Posted by NapoleonXIV | April 30, 2008 10:32 AM
56

On second though, I hate walking to Moe. As long as we're all whining about having it our neighborhood, why not have it on Olive Way? Clever Dunnes would work, their little back area is always deserted.

Something tells me The Stranger has a friendship with some people at Moe bar, and probably Havana too, and they are just throwing some business their way. Why else would they pimp Saint three times on Slog? Only shitty taco trucks get that treatment.

@51:

It was breaded when I tried it last week.

And sorry @40: But $17 (not including tip) for a smallish order of fish, okay fries - ala carte WTF? - and a Manny's is just too much; hell I've had decent sit-down meals that didn't cost that much.

Bring back Frites and I'll be a return customer. Until then, good luck, but count me out.

Two things keep me away: a) the thought of going to work Friday morning with a Slog-Happy hangover, and b) I usually have rehearsals on Thursday nights. If I have a break between shows, maybe I can make it sometime this summer, as I'm taking some Fridays off as vacation during summer.

Dang, I'd love to come to these slog happies and meet the reg'lers here.
Plus I'm fun too!
Thought about it a time or two but I haven't got around to it cuz I'm east sider and working til 5. Crossing the lake during commuter hours sucks. But I'm glad to see the time is 6PM - I think it used to be 5 or 5:30, which I knew I'd not make.
I am not wanting it to move from C'Hill tho'. I agree with Strangeways that the location is good and I make it D'town when I really want to.
Like the 9th for the M's game I'll be there. So going D'town on the 8th too would just be waaay too much excitment for me.
Maybe the next one I can get there - the weather will be nice so I can cross the lake with my top down.
Oh Gawd . . .then I'll have to deal with C'Hill parking!
Yeah, don't bother to tell me to take a bus or ride a bike.
I don't feel guilt - my car gets 35 miles a gallon. My last emmissions test was excellent. Also looked up my carbon footprint from the Jay Inslee flyer I rec'd in the mail earlier this week and turns out I could be wasting alot more then I do.
(settle. . .just kiddin' about wasting more)

I have no helpful suggestions. Slog Happy is great at Moe, I generally enjoy the people I see there, and it's now stumbling distance from our place. Carry on.

(Though I heard the DJ was an awesome addition, and I do love trivia...)
