Should the Hawks Go After Shockey?

posted by on April 23 at 12:58 PM

The rumor mill is churning about the Seahawks potentially looking to trade a late draft pick for the New York Giants’ Pro Bowl Tight End Jeremy Shockey.

The ‘Hawks have already issued a denial, but they did the same thing when rumors about about cutting Shaun Alexander surfaced last February.

It’s been a few years since the Seahawks had a reliable TE, but Shockey’s also kind of a jackass.

That being said, he’s apparently willing to do crazy shit like this:

So, for three ‘Hawks fans who read Slog: should we try and pick up Shockey, or draft a tight end this weekend?

No, he's over rated. He's the Willie Bloomquist of the NY Giants.

Hell-fucking-yes!

Is he a douchebag? Yes.

Is he an animal on the field? Yes.

For a late-round draft pick, in Holmgren's offense? That's a steal. There's no doubt that, in addition to being a dick, he's a really productive tight end.

Jerramy Stevens was a first-round partial bust, and you can't be sure the next drafted tight end won't be the same way.

tough choice. it depends who is out there. i say go for it, were mos def weak at that spot.

Oh, please trade for him. Sure, he would make the team better, but Shockey in liberal, pinko, commie Seattle would be priceless!

All I know is that his tattoo is an abomination. If this town clown truly is "an animal on the field," the Hawks should most definitely grab his poorly-inked ass.

Barbarians win games. Winning games is fun.

pick him up he is fucking bad ass look at that tat

Definitely not. Look at the success of the Giants before and after Shockey was injured last year (they were much better after he was sidelined). Maybe he can play, but Broheim brings the bad intangibles.

Please take him off our hands. The guy is a major tool.

Fuck that. You don't think the Giants aren't ecstatic to get rid of that team-dividing, mealy-urethraed snot-blow and pat Kevin Boss on the back a thousand times. Fuck Jeremy Shockey.

He passes the "Upgrade at the position" test, but fails the "Fucking Moron" test. I'm torn.

I think it'd be a good deal. Get some power and meanness on the field. Our team is too nice, too Seattle-ish.

Maybe we should try and draft some Raiders.

Damaged goods alert ...

Shockey missed the the last two games of the season and the playoffs with a broken fibula.

As a die hard giants fan, but pseudo Seahawks fan (mostly because I'm local), I'm kind of torn. When Shockey is good, he is SO good. But he isn't JUST a reciever, he does a fair amount of blocking and pass protection too, something that is overlooked on the highlight real.

I would rather he staid in New York for a little while longer.

What Seattle should do is PASS the ball, let Matt Hasselback establish himself better and get into a rythem and not rely on the run game so much. Essentially what they did in the latter half of the season.

Why is it that Matt Hasselback makes it look SO hard when he completes a pass?

the fact he was injured is enough reason not to trade for him except for a late round useless pick.

If theres a QB in the NFC that can handle Shockey, its Hass IMHO

He's such a fucktard, would definitely spice things up though...

His personality problems would pale in comparison to Jeremy "Rapist" Stevens. And I'd love to see him get into it with Holmgren.

That said, and looking at how many quality TE's are in the draft, maybe it's a good idea to rebuild at the position with a draft pick?

I can't decide. But I don't think Ruskell will go for it.

I'm torn. Animal indeed but doesn't seem very conducive to the team effort. Seems like a whiner.

And I'm too lazy to go look at his stats for the last 3 to 4 years.

I'm having happy thoughts of Shockey's "yeah! woo! ...what the fuck?" celebration of the missed FG in that Hawks/Giants game a few years back right now.

@ 6
yes seattle is liberal, but like most NFL teams all the seahawks are christian right douches. and the fan base extends to the republican strong holds of kitsap, clark, lewis, franklyn and all those other counties, our qb is a fundamentalist war supporting bush supporting dumb ass. the great mack strong is a big old republican activist. if u want progressives, today's NFL league is not the place to find them.

you watch because u want to see the carnage, the heroics, and the bone crushing hits and because u love the gladiator game, not for political role models. if u r looking for progressives or at least semi liberals, the NFL is not the place youre going to find them. i doubt that the RAMS is stacked with progressive majority members.

Whoa, this is really strange. In my Madden game that I've got going, the Hawks released Alexander and picked up Shockey. And then they won the superbowl!

I love that guy! He's an awesome player and such an animal. I don't think we should go for him tho'.
He's getting old and had a few injuries. Soon as he comes here injuries will start to plague him.
Holmgren and Hasselcrack suck!

Speaking of Madden: if anyone here plays on Xbox Live, email me (jonah@thestranger.com) your tag. Brad Steinbacher won't play after the last time I beat him 42-7.

Pick him up. Seahawks need some emotion. Plus, they haven't had a credible threat at tight end for awhile and even if Shockey doesn't bring it, he'll get you a season of respect and that opens the passing game up even if he's mostly a decoy.

He'd be Jerramy Stevens without the rape and drunk driving.

Fuck this dude, if they pick him up I will just have to go back to hating the seahawks.

I don't understand what's wrong with you guys. Shockey is a great player who sometimes drops passes but can really spur your team on. I don't want him to leave the Giants.

Yes he's an idiot, but so are most football players.

He's actually not a difficult player to work with; I don't know where you get that.

A broken fibula heals, he's not damaged goods.
Seatle may be liberal, but he plays in NY now. Do you really believe that New York isn't liberal and doesn't have a large gay population? It won't affect Shockey.

Shockey is a better tight end than you you could wish for. You should be willing to give your left nut for him to play on your team, and you shouldn't get him for anything less.

As a Giants fan I would love to get rid of Stone Hands Shockey. Unfortunately the Giants have already turned down a high 2nd round pick so a "late pick" ain't gonna make it.

I love the way Mr Reese is managing the Giants, so whatever he does is OK. If I was the GM I wouldn't trade Scockey for a late draft pick. He is a fighter that wants the ball, is that so bad? He can electrify the team and football is a very emotional game. I would trade him for a 2nd round pick but not for a 4th round pick.
