Sports Seattle’s New MLS Team Will Be Named…

on…Seattle Sounders FC. From Seattle MLS:
We’re not afraid to call it now - Seattle Sounders FC will enter MLS in 2009.How do we know? Well, we’ve suspected it for around a month now, as we referenced in an earlier post. When the names to be voted upon were announced, we were confused - no mention of anything Sounders! At the time, the only available options to vote upon were Seattle Alliance, Seattle Republic and Seattle FC. They were registered trademarks and were also registered as websites by MLS Seattle. It seemed we were way off… but then the option to write in names was announced. And on March 31, last Monday, SeattleSoundersFC.net was registered by First and Goal (the operators of Qwest Field).
As of tonight, SeattleRepublic.net, SeattleAlliance.net and SeattleFC.net are all simply parked domain names. But SeattleSoundersFC.net gives us this message- “Coming Soon!
This site is under construction.” Bingo.
Update: Press conference here.

Ack.
Wow. They caved.
Yuck. Why FC? Why is that necessary? Is the ownership afraid that we'll confuse the team with the Seattle Sounders tennis club? Or is it just another case of Euro-envy?
Will the team (sorry, "club") be playing on Qwest Pitch?
@3 I'm not a big fan, but I think it's a "side". Guess we'll have to get educated if we want any cred at all.
Yay!
Eh, I can live with that name.
I'm surprised the Green River Killers didn't take the write-in vote.
Yeah, it's Euro envy, or more accurately Anglo envy. But that's cool; most of the great sides worldwide were created that way. The club in Genova, Italia is called "Genoa"; the club by the Rio Plata is called "River Plate", and they play in the same league as "Arsenal" and "Newell's Old Boys".
At least they didn't name "Seattle Starbucks", like the New York Red Bulls. Though I hope they have some kind of garish cheeseball advertising on their shirts, like maybe a dodgy internet-gambling or porn site. Hey, Sextracker is local, right?
Thank Christ. Those other names were lame-o.
Looking forward to some great footy! :-)
It's only because I'm reading this on the Slog, rather than anywhere else, that my first thought turns to Savage Love columns on the practice of sounding.
Did nobody at the league office think about this? Am I the only one?
Jesus, #10, we've all been trying hard NOT to think about sounding. Thanks for ruining our streak.
Remember, if it's an FC, you can give it a nickname ... which means ...
GREEN RIVER KILLERS wins!
I like it better with the FC than without, for some reason. Just Seattle Sounders is very 1970s, but the FC classes it up a bit.
Green River Killers should be the/an ultras group.
Sounders is a million times better than Alliance, or any of the other stupid choices.
I still think they should play their games in Memorial Stadium and call the team Lower Queen Arsenal.
@10, ohmigod I obviously missed that column so I hopped over to Urban Dictionary to see what it means. Fuck, that's some seriously aargghhh, get the images out of my head. Now, please.
I'm just glad I don't have to root for the first sports team named after something from Star Wars. (Would they have had a Squatch-like mascot named Chewy?)
FC = For Christ?
would have preferred star wars of course, but this will do nicely.
@16 part of me was really hoping for a sponsor name. how could anyone resist Vulcan Seattle?
Does anyone else remember FC Seattle?
naming team for a geographic feature is a bit ...generic...does little to identify us....
most people around the world, if you say to them, "Sound!" don't think "Puget!" or "Seattle!"
it's like calling the NY team the "Rivers" because NY is on a river you see...
Yes there's Denver...those're the "Rockies" ...not the Denver "Mountains"....
Yes! I just want to know if we get to keep Sammy the Sounder...
