Slog - Comments on Oslo Opera

The lead story on Arcspace.com concerns this new building in Norway. The work was designed by Snøhetta and opened on April 12th. The images of the interior are far more striking than those of the exterior. Judging from the images of the inside, will not this work displace its purpose? Its purpose being made secondary to itself as a work. Few operas have in them the power to match or overcome such a staggering wealth of colors and materials....

It is an impressive building in person, I must say.

But what you say about this building can pretty much apply to any other work of architectural masturbation in any other city. What about, say, the Central Library connotes books? What about the Guggenheim says art? This building could be an American embassy, an office building, a government building, a recreation center.

@2: what about this building connotes baskets? http://www.worldslargestthings.com/easterntour/basketbuildingSubheader.jpg
the outside must reveal the program of the inside? that's pretty literal, don't you think?

as long as i can walk up that roof, i'm good with it.

The building was built to be able to host Operas so that it puts Norway on the map as far as being a place to now go see Opera. Opera houses have traditionally been over the top with color and spectacle but when the lights go down all the focus is on the Opera being preformed. People will not be walking around the lobby looking at the building during the performance when they have come to see an Opera. They can do what people usually do at the Opera and that is look around during intermission.
Putting it simpler Charles. No.

No.

Architecture does not work that way. It's something most people experience on a very subtle, almost subconscious level.

Don't let the architects' own pretentiousness get to you. Their work is always in the background of its function.

"a staggering wealth of colors and materials"

Huh? The interior seems to be exclusively wood panelling and austere white spaces. And orangey seats.

Maybe post BEFORE the acid next time?
