Not to mention that Skyy vodka sucks, though so does Absolut. Stoli fan, myself.

Am I the only one who wants to go buy a case of Absolut after work, now?

Well, they're pandering to a bunch of insanely racist xenophobes. So it's not really shocking that they'd have this big of a stick up their ass about the ad in question. Some people might claim that the boycott and outrage leveled against Absolut is legitimate and it's only about protecting law abiding citizens etc., but there's really no way to see this hooplah as anything more than a manifestation of the racism and paranoia that underlies the most extreme of the anti-(illegal) immigration crowd. Many of these fucking idiots actually believe in the reconquista and that Mexican immigrants (legal and undocumented) are a 5th column for the coming Mexican invasion.

In the mind of a racist conspiracy theorist, a harmless ad becomes an encoded call to arms. Skyy are just pulling the classic capitalist dick move by supporting these idiots.

I made a special trip to my favorite STATE RUN LIQUOR STORE earlier this week, and have since been enjoying me some icy fine Swedish vodka. Thanks for fighting the good fight, Mr. Constant.

I think all alcohol companies should post political manifestos on their websites so I know where they stand on the issues and I can make informed decisions about what brand to drink in my girly drinks. (said jokingly of course)

Paul,

I don't think the habeas corpus question is quite as irrelevant as the others, thanks to the Bush Administration.

Skyy is owned by an Italian company anyhow. It was started in San Francisco I believe - and IMO isn't bad, the only reason I'd really avoid it is because, well, Jesus, they spell it with two "Y"s, *shiver* - but it's run by Gruppo Campari now.

So the real question is, what is their stance on the Marshall Plan?

you missed malkin's follow-up faux-outrage: absolut has another ad in the works that markets to teh gays now [the humanity!]. for this, she questions why alcohol companies try to be "agents of change." yes, marketing to homosexuals makes a company an agent of change. abercrombie & fitch, who knew?

i bought a fifth of absolut last week. i plan on picking up another after work today. i'm going to wash my dishes with it.

Hey Paul Constant! Why don't you be a bit more responsible for a change and tell the goddamn truth? "immigration" is not the issue here, it's "ILLEGAL immigration".

My favorite part of their website is the flash ad on the left that seems to compare Mexico to a toilet bowl.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in a bunch of white supremacists and red-white-and-blue flagwaving hawks getting their star spangled panties in a bunch over what was initially a Russian drink?

Or are they going to change the name from "vodka" to "Liberty Booze"?

They've had a whole 16,000 visitors. That's quite a big movement. I'm sure Absolut is shaking in their boots.

If you don't mind Austrian Vodka, Trader Joes (in some states, sorry.) sells Monopolowa for damn cheap, and as much as I prefer the brown stuff to vodka, it's the best deal out there IMO.

Does Budweiser support habeas corpus? This could be a big issue in the upcoming presidential election.

@14,

Nothing, and I mean nothing, about that Absolut ad referenced illegal immigration. Would you be less pissed off if Mexicans were coming here legally?

My relatives got shit on when they immigrated here, legally, thank you very much. Once the brown people started showing up, Americans stopped picking on blue-eyed, blond Scandinavians. Oh, and the only kids who would associate with my mother when she was a child? Mexicans.

The thing that's truly ridiculous is that William Gheen wants to use Skyy to make a martini. Umm a vodka martini maybe, but not a martini. Also this is the dumbest boycott in the history of the planet. end of story.

Jordan B @ 23, you're forgetting Bill O'Reilly's boycott of France. He sure taught them a lesson about, um... something?

I will now drink Absolute and nothing but Absolute... not that I was really drinking much Vodka before, but I'm sure I can substitute some of my tequila with vodka.

Does anyone else see the irony in these people vilifying Absolut for "pandering to illegal immigration supporters" when the only reason our boarders are where they are now is that we took them by force from the people that were already there? How do you get more "illegal immigration" than that?

(Though I personally must say that I don't particularly like Absolut, I much prefer Kettle One or Hangar One)

Posted by blank12357 | April 11, 2008 1:55 PM

22: Exactly, the reason the hardcore anti-immigration people are so pissed about the ad is not because it advocates illegal immigration (which it doesn't), but because it makes light of historical reality, a reality the xenophobes are afraid of. To them, the very idea of Mexico having its old territory is offensive because they're afraid of a strong Mexico contolling a large swath of the U.S. Why are they upset? Because they're afraid of Mexicans. Oh, and they have sticks up their asses.

I like SKYY simply because it's cheaper than most the other vodkas without trying to actively kill your gullet.

Gee, now that SKYY is showing its true colors, I'll have to go back to Graves (190 proof, bottled in Somerville, MA, but sold in Conn) if I want to buy quality American booze. (small joke)

Citroen pulled their car ads featuring a scowling Mao Zedong a couple months ago after Chinese internet users found the ad offensive and started an internet complaining campaign (a camplain?) Even though the ads were running in Spain (a country that, last time I checked, was situated not even remotely near China) the company backed down, apologized, and replaced the scowling Mao with a scowling Napolean.

So there is precedent for corporations backing down if enough people claim to be offended. From Muhammed to Mao to Mexico, everybody's offended by something!

@14, nothing about this boycott seems to be about illegal immigration. It seems to be racist fucking bullshit. They don't distinguish between documented citizens and undocumented workers; according to these stupid sites, they're all evil brown people who want to take over half the United States with the help of giant corporations.

Posted by Paul Constant | April 11, 2008 2:18 PM

Because, like, the people of Spain aren't going to be offended by a scowling Napoleon?

All Vodka is similar. Blind fold tests have shown that people claim to be experts prefer the cheap stuff! Those who can tell the differance, but even the cheaper brands often are prefered in taste tests. drink it straight. Few people drink it straight though. Having said that, there is a big differance in the flavored brands and Absolut flavored brands have all the subtly koolaid

One last thing - Absolut is French owned, let's see how much fun Fox News can have with that. Of course it was just sold to Ricard last week, so it was still the Swede's behind this one, but I doubt they'll care.

@26 & 28, most of the land in question was Mexican in name only. The Mexican state had virtually no control over it, as it was full of Indians (Native Mexicans?).

Stoli is too sweet. Bleh!

Absolut is "eh" with a shrug.

Skyy is a good shot at room temperature.

40: So what's your point? It doesn't matter what the historical reality is because the people boycotting it are angry because they see it as advocating "reconquista" or Mexican control of the United States. The historical record has nothing to do with it. The ad is a harmless joke based on 19th century borders. Nothing more.

You know the Skyy Vodka press release was satire, right? In fact, it is definitely worth a read.

All vodka is swill. The kind of thing you put in your drink when all you want is fruit juice that makes you shit-faced.

But if I'm going to buy a vodka, I wouldn't buy Absolut. That IS an fucking annoying ad. Of course we're not going to lose the SW to Mexico, but it shows a lot of cojones to put billboards up to that effect. If Budweiser put up billboards in northern Chile saying, "In an Absolut world, northern Chile would be part of Peru" (big war, late 19th century, look it up), there would be fucking RIOTS in Chile. Americans put up with way too much shit from militant Mexicans. Que se vayan los ilegales.
