Well, they're pandering to a bunch of insanely racist xenophobes. So it's not really shocking that they'd have this big of a stick up their ass about the ad in question. Some people might claim that the boycott and outrage leveled against Absolut is legitimate and it's only about protecting law abiding citizens etc., but there's really no way to see this hooplah as anything more than a manifestation of the racism and paranoia that underlies the most extreme of the anti-(illegal) immigration crowd. Many of these fucking idiots actually believe in the reconquista and that Mexican immigrants (legal and undocumented) are a 5th column for the coming Mexican invasion.

In the mind of a racist conspiracy theorist, a harmless ad becomes an encoded call to arms. Skyy are just pulling the classic capitalist dick move by supporting these idiots.

I made a special trip to my favorite STATE RUN LIQUOR STORE earlier this week, and have since been enjoying me some icy fine Swedish vodka. Thanks for fighting the good fight, Mr. Constant.

I think all alcohol companies should post political manifestos on their websites so I know where they stand on the issues and I can make informed decisions about what brand to drink in my girly drinks. (said jokingly of course)

Skyy is owned by an Italian company anyhow. It was started in San Francisco I believe - and IMO isn't bad, the only reason I'd really avoid it is because, well, Jesus, they spell it with two "Y"s, *shiver* - but it's run by Gruppo Campari now.

If you don't mind Austrian Vodka, Trader Joes (in some states, sorry.) sells Monopolowa for damn cheap, and as much as I prefer the brown stuff to vodka, it's the best deal out there IMO.

Does anyone else see the irony in these people vilifying Absolut for "pandering to illegal immigration supporters" when the only reason our boarders are where they are now is that we took them by force from the people that were already there? How do you get more "illegal immigration" than that?

22: Exactly, the reason the hardcore anti-immigration people are so pissed about the ad is not because it advocates illegal immigration (which it doesn't), but because it makes light of historical reality, a reality the xenophobes are afraid of. Citroen pulled their car ads featuring a scowling Mao Zedong a couple months ago after Chinese internet users found the ad offensive and started an internet complaining campaign (a camplain?) Even though the ads were running in Spain (a country that,last time I checked, was situated not even remotely near China) the company backed down, apologized, and replaced the scowling Mao with a scowling Napolean.

So there is precedent for corporations backing down if enough people claim to be offended. From Muhammed to Mao to Mexico, everybody's offended by something!

All Vodka is similar. Blind fold tests have shown that people claim to be experts prefer the cheap stuff! Those who can tell the differance, but even the cheaper brands often are prefered in taste tests. drink it straight. Few people drink it straight though. Having said that, there is a big differance in the flavored brands and Absolut flavored brands have all the subtly koolaid

But if I'm going to buy a vodka, I wouldn't buy Absolut. That IS an fucking annoying ad. Of course we're not going to lose the SW to Mexico, but it shows a lot of cojones to put billboards up to that effect. If Budweiser put up billboards in northern Chile saying, "In an Absolut world, northern Chile would be part of Peru" (big war, late 19th century, look it up), there would be fucking RIOTS in Chile.
