This sounds like one of those "women's books", that's going to get excerpted in Cosmo and sold with a pink cover with embossed pumps and martini glasses on the front. So her audience isn't really interested in reading about real promiscuity. They just want a little titillation followed by a promise that you can slut around a little after college and still be a good girl at heart. That nice man in the suit you see when you're buying your bran muffin will still accept you.

Globally, people have had an average number of nine sexual partners. Men have had more sexual partners than women - 10.2 compared with 6.9 (not sure how this happens). It is all relative of course. 40 partners in 14 years is more than average but not what I would call a slut per se. It bears thought that most people aren't completely honest about thier sexual experience and history.

If 40 guys by age 38 is a slut then I'm a big ol' ho-bag.

Putting that aside, though, the disparity could also be explained by sample size. If both sexes have about X sex partners on average, but one gender is pretty uniform in the distribution (e.g. most men have close to X partners) while the other gender is really skewed (e.g. most women have much fewer than X partners while a few women sleep with everyone), you could get screwy results if you take a small sample and call it representative.

I'm just guessing here, but I would assume based on societal norms, etc, that the average number of sex partners is rather high for most gay men compared to straight women. If that's true, then the homos here comparing numbers to this would-be trollop are using an inaccurate barometer for sluttishness.

I will say, however, that if you're going to write TWO books about what a lusty bitch you are, "forty-odd" is way too low a number. She needs to be at least into triple digits.

One more thing I will say: the Kinsey studies and so forth that try and pin down an average number of sex partners for women are inherently flawed in that straight women are the ONLY sexual group that tends to underestimate their total. Straight men and gays/trans of both genders tend to overestimate, because we like to brag about it. Straight chicks have to deal with the shame, and so they hedge.

I don't keep a number of people I have slept with ... it's not worth it. Then you have to think and remember all those shitty lays that you never wanted to happen in the first place and ascribe a number to it.

The average American adult male has had 4-7 sexual partners in their lifetime and the average American adult female has had 2-5 sexual partners in their lifetime.

Dan, your math and assumptions need a little re-evaluating. Per the website (I didn't have to wade through much of it to get this), she married in 2001. Taking your assumption that she lost her virginity at about 16, adding the assumption that she started dating her now-husband about 2 years before they married (b/c that seems to be the trend), and adding the assumption (since you get to assume, so do I) that she hasn't cheated on her husband, then she slept with 40-odd men between 1986 and 1999, which is only 13 years, not the 21 years you give her for this romp. Sure, that still only puts her at 3-4 per year, but I'm betting that the majority of those were during the 7 years of college and grad school, which puts her closer to 6 a year for a several-year block of time. And, being that I have pretty much the exact same numbers and timeline she does, I can tell you that that does indeed get one a teensy little reputation for being a bit of a slut. I mean, a new/different guy every other month for 7 years does not exactly constitute serial monogamy.

hmmm...apparently in all these surveys they take asking people how many sex partners they've had, they don't talk to many gay men...I also think there's a lot of fudging going on, and many people are like Bill Clinton and don't count anything as a sex act unless it's genital to genital penetration...

@27 - the average American woman nowadays becomes sexually active in middle school, so she has a lot more years than that, based on an earlier start, thus her conquests per year is still pretty low and definitely not Slut level.

Yeah, being a slut is all relative I suppose. It's the admiration/jelousy love/hate relationship to people who just have more sex than you. It fascinates us, and infuriates us at the same time. Loathing something you desire sort of thing.

So in the land of chemistry, if you sleep with more than five people, you are probably a slut ... weird.
