Mariners 4, Rangers 1

posted by on April 3 at 9:41 AM

Welcome Carlos Silva: seven innings, three hits, and just one run (off a Ben Broussard home run in the sixth). Nice work.

Vidro and Lopez (who seems to like the #2 slot) both homered, Sean Green pitched a perfect inning in the eighth, and #5 starter Miguel Batista stepped up in the closer role and finished things off. As for Richie Sexson, DMZ over at U.S.S. Mariner broke down his night at the plate and…well, it wasn’t pretty. Still, Mariners take the series — and would have swept if not for Tuesday’s rare combustion from J.J. Putz.

Speaking of Putz: He’s on the 15-day DL with mild costochondritis, which Seth Kolloen at Enjoy the Enjoyment found is an “inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint — where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Pain caused by costochondritis may mimic that of a heart attack.” The closer role will be platooned his absence.

Next up: A trip to lowly Baltimore on Friday. Game 1 is at 4:05 pm.

That "lowly Baltimore" crack was directed at me, wasn't it. We'll see.

It's OK, Sherrill can step in as closer.

Richie Sexson sucks again. Not surprised. He's even more pathetic to watch than Jeff "Useless" Cirillo used to be.

Looks like the Mariners have their team chemistry in order just in time to sign Barry.

God, signing Barry is about the only thing that could rescue this team for me. I find myself actively hating them.

Don't hate. Hate no es bueno.

Up was down last night.

Lost in this: Silva, who walks nobody and strikes out few, walked 3 and struck out 5. He currently has more K's than Felix and as many as Bedard had in 5 innings. Just hilarious. If Silva pitched like that the rest of the year and the next 3, he might actually be worth that ridiculous contract the M's gave him.

Also, JJ combusted last night due to a rib injury he suffered while striking out Michael Young. Go figure his velocity dropped to the low 90's and Josh Hamilton immediately dropped his next offering in the RF seats. JJ's now on the 15 day DL and we go by the dreaded closer-by-committee. Batista, who was the (bleh) closer for Toronto in 2005, took the 9th last night since he's available in the pen on his 'throw-days' before starts. He will actually start on Saturday.

I'm personally excited for tonight's start of the minor league season. I cover those games for Lookout Landing and it's great to take a daily look at our prospects.

er, in that 2nd paragraph, last night should have read 'Tuesday night'. Obviously, JJ didn't pitch last night.

Yay, they're out of town for a while. Can we get them to move to Oklahoma City?
