Well, sure, that's Florida for you, right? What I want to know is what is up with Harvard?

Abstinence-only education? I see it as Darwinism.

Posted by Gloria | April 2, 2008 4:46 PM

Good one, Gloria.

Don't these children have parents!? This is disgusting.

In my day it was diet Coke. Or was it regular Coke. Maybe New Coke?

Anyway, the abstinence-only-educated shall inherit the earth.

Brawndo. It's got electrolytes.

I honestly checked the date by the byline after reading the post. Echoing Gloria, I say, to the spawn of the Floridians, "Drink up!"

So that's why there's an editorial in the PI on that which prints tomorrow morning but is online right now, just waiting for comments ...

We used Diet Coke. From what I recall.

Didn't work either.

Drinking a cap of bleach doesn't kill you?

Fuck overhauling sex-ed. What all middle schools need is a class in basic rational thinking. Kids should be asking, 'by what mechanism does the bleach prevent HIV transmission?' This kind of magical-thinking should have been stamped out by the 6th grade.

So people with an inadequate education about how evolution works think that other people with an inadequate education about how sex works are genetically inferior? I suppose the would, wouldn't they?

Posted by elenchos | April 2, 2008 5:38 PM

@10: I'll feel stupid when I start drinking bleach.

Posted by Gloria | April 2, 2008 5:47 PM

@10 It can go either way. I think Gloria was referring to the fitness reducing effect of drinking bleach. I was referring to the boosting of reproduction by not educating your kids about birth control.

@9, no, drinking a cap of bleach won't kill you. Drinking a cap of Malathion won't kill you either. That still doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | April 2, 2008 6:27 PM

If they drank a bottle of bleach they wouldn't have to worry about getting HIV.

Thank you George W. Bush, right-wingers, Puritans, and everybody else who thinks you can actually stop humans ('cuz teenagers are humans) from having sex. We've only been doing it for a roughly half million years (or 4000 if you go by the Bible's calculations).

I think we should abolish Florida.

having grown up in florida, i honestly remember no sex education at all, not even abstinence-only. the closest we got was being taken to the local hospital in 7th grade, where the girls and boys were separated. who knows what the boys went through, but the girls were shown aborted fetuses in jars and then they explained how tampons work.

They can't really be that stupid...can they? Maybe it was a joke...? Please?

Posted by DanFan | April 3, 2008 6:54 AM

they might be that stupid. but that doesn't mean they really do those things. well, maybe if they are desperate. i remember the rumor that having sex in a hot tub would prevent pregnancy. this, of course, from a bunch of seventh graders who didn't even have the possibility of having sex -- let alone access to a hot tub for such activities.
