When I would cross the border with my mother as a child, they would often separate us and ask me questions like what my birthday was, who the President was, where I went to school. (She looks gringa and I am morena.) I've been detained, questioned, and pulled over because of my dark hair and olive skin many times, and so has my father.

I thus developed a dislike of Border Patrol from childhood-- not for what they do, but for how they treat other human beings. Even U.S.-born citizens of Mexican descent like myself can't be comfortable on the border.
