He's lying. Nazi popes aren't capable of feeling shame.

It must be quite the slap in the face to have the pope who's protecting the priest that anally raped you as a child say HE is suffering.

Can a reporter ask the Pope if it felt good to wear a Nazi uniform and fire on Allied Aircraft while defending the Reich in the last days of the war?

@2,

It's my impression that sexual predators often consider themselves to be the victims. It looks like Ratzinger's also susceptible to the predator pity party.

Pope Benedict removed the founder of the Legionaries of Christ following an investigation showing credibly that Degollado had abused young men in his organization, banishing him from leadership to a life of penance and prayer:

While the ABCNews article leads with the claim that 19 accused bishops have not lost their title, the first example, Anthony O'Connell, has lost his. Gerald M. Barbarito has served as bishop of Palm Beach since 2003.

Michael Wegs complain that O'Connell ought to be in prison - parenthetically: I agree - however, the fact that he is not in prison falls not on Pope Benedict but on the civil authorities. In America we have the separation of Church and state. If the Missouri prosecutors pursue prosecution, find willing witnesses and can show, beyond a reasonable doubt, that O'Connell is guilty of the crimes alleged, then he will be imprisoned.

(By ordering O'Connell to the Trappist Abbey, the Church may be doing as much as it can to protect others until the civil authorities do their part.)

The bishops have engaged in an active conspiracy to conceal child rape and transported known child abusers both across state lines and out of the country to avoid detection.

Gutless state and federal prosecutors are part of the problem here.

All the Catholic sex abuse aside... I don't feel much for the Catholics who are up in arms about it. Your faith can basically be summed up in the principle "the pope is always right". After all, the pope is officially considered the earthly surrogate for Jesus.

Of course, lots of Catholics don't understand this, or think they can be Catholics and not adhere to this notion, so they can stay Catholic.

Leave the fucking church. You can always go Protestant or join one of those sedevacantist schisms.

Freudian slip in the ABC News story Dan links:

"You cannot put on clerical attire, and you cannot SERVICE in a public way in ministry," said Austin, Texas Bishop Gregory Aymond, chair of the U.S. Bishop's Committee on Protection of Children and Young People.

Well, at least he can service in a private way at his country-club abbey retirement home, or while traveling unfettered. Maybe he and Larry Craig can hook up in an airport somewhere. Maybe Bishop Aymond would like to watch, if that wouldn't be too "public."
