Slog - Comments on Gay Republicans

You would think after eight years of Rove/Bush—think of all those anti-gay marriage amendments—that there wouldn't be any such thing as a gay Republican anymore. You'd be wrong. The Log Cabin Republicans held their annual convention in San Diego last weekend, and journalist Rex Wockner was there....

I have to sorta agree that what is the point of getting married when you can loose your job or housing simply for being gay. First, lets make sure we can keep our jobs and homes then worry about getting married.

But there are a couple of those gay Republicans I would totally do, but then there were some pretty damn cute Nazi's as well so....you know I will fuck anything if it is cute and hung!

LCReps are all pro-gay marriage. They're trying to change the republican parties stance on that.

There's no need to be assholes about it; I for sure support the LCReps. they're basically an institution that, as far as I can tell, is trying to change the Republican party from the inside and accept gay marriage.

Just as Southerners are no longer pro Jim-Crow, the Republicans will eventually change their attitudes on gay marriage. LCRs are trying to hurry the process. Sure I don't think they'll succeed anytime soon. But I damn well support them.

Comment by Reverse Polarity

@2,

Every time I hear the argument that the government shouldn't recognize marriages of any kind (that it should just be a religious issue), I want to bang my head on a wall. Marriage as a legal entity has been a part of US laws since the country was founded. There are over a thousand specific legal rights and privileges federally, and several hundred at the state level, that are granted to married people.

Yes, in a perfect utopia, "marriage" would strictly be a religious thing, and the government would stay out of it. But the reality is that that is never going to happen. Marriage as a legal entity is firmly entrenched in our culture and legal system. It cannot be undone.

If you don't want to get married, fine. Don't. Nobody's telling you that you have to. But I don't think you should have the right to tell me that I can't get married to my boyfriend of 20+ years if I want to.

I never understood how anyone can support a party that doesn't support them. I have a friend down in Texas who's a rabid republican. However, she's also gay... and engaged... to a woman... who's a huge Hilary fan... and they're both wiccan/neo-Pagan/Sylvia Brown worshiping fools.

I told my friend about the LCRs, after she whined on her blog about how no one understood her and everyone hated her for her republicanism. I read a few things on their blog. It's very noble of them to stand up for what they believe, but no one seems to understand that the republican party is much less a party of ideals and political philosophies. It has been overtaken by right-wing Christian fanaticism. there is no room for thought. No room for reason. And there is no room for a wiccan gay woman or her posse (no matter how much they too lack in thought and reason.)

Such fucking bullshit. I will never vote for anyone who hates me and wishes I would rot in a fictitious hell.

I'm a gay republican. Why should I be a democrat just because I'm gay. There are plenty of things that I don't agree about with the Democratic party. There is no perfect party out there. How about you let people support whoever they want. There is more to life than the Gay Agenda, which I obviously support. I'm not totally overwhelmed by the gay support shown by the lead Democrat contenders.

Comment by Calpete

Every time I read that the government should just stay the hell out of marriage I wonder to myself why it is that no one understands the *history* of marriage?

The church has "matrimony" as a sacrament, but it doesn't have "marriage". Marriage is historically a contractual arrangement sanctioned by the government. The fact that in many societies the government agent who acted as officiating notary for the marriage was also a priest, as in ancient Rome for example, should not confuse the issue and the two roles should not be understood to have been operating at the same time. The Christian church didn't take over the role of officiant until the Emperor Constantine made Christianity the religion of the state, and matrimony didn't become a sacrament of the Christian church until the early Middle Ages.

As far as I'm concerned, being an elderly single gay guy, the church can have all the matrimony it wants, but at some time in the not-too-distant future the government needs to give me and any prospective male mate the same rights and privileges and tax breaks it gives to straight people who register their marriages. Otherwise, words about equality are just words, no matter who speaks them.
