If that is true, she will have been locked up for longer than I have been alive, now that is fucked up.

Of the six children - three boys and three girls aged between five and 20 - five-year-old Felix, Stefan, 18, and Kerstin lived with their mother in the cellar, where they never saw sunlight and received no education.
Shudder.

I live here in Austria, and everyone is pretty shocked and asking themselves what kind of country they are living in... after all, only two years ago Natascha Kampusch escaped from a cellar near Vienna where her kidnapper had held her for almost her entire childhood. At that time it was considered an unprecedented case... and now Austria has outdone itself again... truly shocking for such a small country.

Never been to Austria but my stereotype is people are clean, polite, remote, distant and "don't get involved." Perhaps they should be a bit more nosy? Did no one ever visit this crzy man's house?

Crazy man had a wife, unPC. Who allegedly was unaware her missing daughter was in the basement.

Familial love FTL. Is there a way we can donate to a therapy fund? Or just a "baseball bat and dark alley" fund?

Oooooohhh, holy fuck. I think I'm gonna puke.

I'd really like to hear what that wife thought was going on in the locked basement. WTF?

In a movie, this would be labeled too far out.

This one story I wish I did not read, depravity has a new definition.

Hitler was Austrian.... Vienna is the best known city .... they once has an empire ... most of the Royals of Europe are related to the Austrian old royal families ...

Horror story of the year.

@11:

Austria has universal health care.

Better to be a victim of unimaginable depravity there than here!

For real, how did the wife not notice her daughter giving birth to seven children and raising three in the fucking basement?

From another article I read, I got the impression it was in a basement somewhere other than the house where he and his wife lived.

It's difficult to truly get my head around this horror.

Oh yeah, here they only beat their children or starve them to death. Please, a little less self -righteousness.

@13, this is the premise of a movie, in a way. Go rent Bad Boy Bubby. Good stuff.

#16, no, it's in the same building, but it seems that the father, mother, and three of the grandchildren live on the second floor, and the imprisoned daughter and the other three children live in the cellar.

how and why could any human being be driven to do this, not to mention to his own child and grandchildren?

And now, from the country that brought you Hitler, the Von Trapp family, and Natascha Kampusch, we present: incest! Kidnapping! Child Abuse!

We'll be here all millenium, folks.

@20,

In that case, I don't see how the mother didn't know. How did he explain the presence of the three grandkids?
