The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) said he was a danger to the community and insisted he not be released. But he was.
The whole parole hearing system is under review and changes have been stalled for months. But this suspect was released, the authorities knew he was a danger and this is the end result.
So it is not just a man hunt going on but a call for an investigation into the Attorney Generals parole practices since it is partly to blame for releasing this guy.
I was in a car passing Merritt the day after this happened. Merritt is a small town in a beautiful semidesert valley. A major highway moving thousands of vehicles between Vancouver and the Okanagan (wine district in BC) passes right by Merritt which is surrounded by ranch land. Sure this guy could head into the bush but more likely he could also get in a car and be in Vancouver where he could disappear blending into the neglected downtown east side where thousands of mentally ill people live on the street within 2 hrs. But I guess he is one of these guys that thinks he has a chance surviving in the bush.
