One more feather in Australia's "Fucking Barking Mad" cap.

So what's next for these Heterosexuals? Marrying their dogs?

Posted by Sargon Bighorn | April 7, 2008 3:31 PM

Posted by Sarah | April 7, 2008 3:32 PM

i am throwing up a LOT in my mouth over this. the english tabloids are having a field day, of course.

Posted by scary tyler moore | April 7, 2008 3:41 PM

Shouldn't it be "Every Child Deserves a Mother / Sister and a Father" ?

Posted by Greg | April 7, 2008 3:42 PM

"She's my daughter!"
"She's my sister."
"She's my daughter"
"My sister. My daughter."
*slap, slap*
"She's my sister AND my daughter."

"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

Posted by TheMisanthrope | April 7, 2008 3:43 PM

@5: That was brother and sister. Hot brother and sister. Totally not as gross.

Posted by Aislinn | April 7, 2008 3:51 PM

No, Jesus. Noooooo!!!!

Aside from the incest charges, they should seriously be in jail for the negligent death of their first child.

Posted by w7ngman | April 7, 2008 4:01 PM

You guys crack me up: lol @ marrying the dogs! hehe. OMG I haven't thought about V.C. Andrews in so long! I totally need to read those Flowers in the Attic books again! They were totally creepy and enthralling!!! And, did anyone besides me see the creepy movie that they made???

you should have posted this with the SVU...I think this was a plot from a show, a year or two ago.

Posted by michael strangeways | April 7, 2008 4:40 PM

Ew ew ew ew ew. I feel dirty all over just from the daughter's comment," I saw him as a man first, a father second." That's a Daddy Complex to the extreme.

Posted by Marty | April 7, 2008 4:55 PM

@12 those VC Andrews books made me scared of powdered donuts for a verrrry long time.

Note to weird Australian father/daughter: Ewwww, that's not right people, it's just not right.

Posted by PopTart | April 7, 2008 5:01 PM

Isn't she lovely
Isn't she wonderful
Isn't she precious
Less than one minute old
I never thought through love we'd be
Making one as lovely as she
But isn't she lovely made from love

Posted by nbc | April 7, 2008 5:07 PM

Maybe I'm more sexually liberated than most of you, but I really don't have a problem with this. It's consentual sex and nobody's getting hurt, so what the hey. Just for Chrissakes use some fucking birth control so you're not bringing any three-headed babies into the world!

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | April 7, 2008 5:33 PM

Well... the Egyptians started the trend a very long time ago.

Somehow, they managed to rule effectively for a few thousand years...

Posted by Ayden | April 7, 2008 5:46 PM

thank god they are not from the south

Posted by mickey in AR | April 7, 2008 5:55 PM

There's actually a surprisingly high level of incest in Australia, FWIW.

Posted by Will in Seattle | April 7, 2008 5:59 PM

@18: they've reproduced twice already.

Posted by Fnarf | April 7, 2008 6:00 PM

@4: Actually, a guy in India has already done that.

Posted by Anna | April 7, 2008 6:03 PM

Southern Hemisphere. No big surprise.

Posted by Bob | April 7, 2008 6:39 PM

Well yeah, Fnarf, duh, I can read. I was simply stating that THAT'S the part of this I have a problem with. If people want to fuck, I don't think it's any of the government's business who they fuck, as long as proper precautions are taken.

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | April 7, 2008 7:14 PM

Oh God, Dan!! Wreck my week why don't you?! @18 - Shoosh You! Shoosh!!

Posted by DanFan | April 7, 2008 7:22 PM

Jenny says she found herself "looking at him, sort of going, oh, he's not too bad,"

well, there's no resisting sex w/yr dad with red hot attraction like that, is there? weirdest thing about the article, imo.

and the congenital heart failure of their first child...very well had nothing to do with the incest. single generation incest does not result in birth-defected offspring any more than any other two unrelated people would produce. that's popular mythology.

Posted by ellarosa | April 7, 2008 7:24 PM

Do you have any documentation for that? First cousins, sure, but really close relations do have a higher risk.

Posted by keshmeshi | April 7, 2008 7:29 PM

For you, 5280, from Anais Nin's diary, June 23, 1933:

"I don't feel toward you as if you were my daughter."
"I don't feel as if you were my Father."
"What a tragedy. What are we going to do about it? I have met the woman of my life, the ideal, and it is my daughter! I cannot even kiss you as I would like to. I'm in love with my own daughter!"
"Everything you feel, I feel."
He uncovered himself. I caressed him with my hand. I saw him quiver with desire.
With a strange violence, I lifted my negligee and I lay over him.
"Toi, Anais! Je n'ai plus de Dieu!"

we should have a book club meeting about it:

sorry. i don't know how to do the word/link thingy.

Posted by computer illiterate | April 7, 2008 8:45 PM

28, the best explanation i could find comes from dog breeding--sorry:

Remember that we mentioned that genes come in pairs. Sometimes the pairs match (called homozygous) and sometimes they don't (heterozygous). Inbreeding does not cause genetic problems. But inbreeding does increase the chances of creating matched pairs. And if the particular pair that matches up is recessive then you will see in the puppies something you did not see in either parent. It could be a good thing or a bad thing. Incest breeding is like breeding with a magnifier. It makes whatever is there bigger, and happen more often. Incest inbreeding risks get bigger with each generation. The first time it happens it is less risky than if there is more incest breeding in the background.

Posted by ellarosa | April 7, 2008 8:52 PM

@31 Word.

Why not sterilize themselves, then adopt if they want the kids?

The 20+ yrs I've been in MN I always heard it called 'Stearns County Syndrome'. The first Google listing is kind of amusing (I suck at the linking thing also).

Posted by drewl | April 7, 2008 9:59 PM

i'm afraid i was making a different point than the one you derived, drewl. look, unrelated people are almost as statistically likely to produce defective offspring as closely related people. that's my point. the real risk comes when you have multiple generations inbreeding. ok? no three-headed babies or severe problems emerge in populations until the incest has compounded for several generations--that's when you get the famous problems associated with royal lines, remote and isolated populations, and pure-bred dogs.

Posted by ellarosa | April 7, 2008 10:29 PM

@4: Most of us heteros just want nice happy lives with a pet, 2.3 kids, a picket fence and a hot non-relative who's phenomenal in bed. :)

Neither of these people is attractive enough for anyone else to want to fuck them, but do they have to bring innocent kids into it? Good Lord.

There is not enough bleach to soak my brain in after reading all the news posts on this.

Posted by DJ Eternal Darkness | April 8, 2008 4:28 AM

@12: Yeah, I remember. It was 1987, I had just completed my basic training in the military and on a day off I friend and I went to the movies. It became a toss up between Flowers in the Attic and Full Metal Jacket.

We agreed on the former because my friend, who read a lot, was really interested in seeing how it would translate to the big screen. Personally, I don't think that I have ever seen anything so obscene in my life, and I don't mean the incest theme either. It was my introduction to teenage-female-martyrdom porn.

Posted by saxfanatic | April 8, 2008 5:43 AM

@30 & 36: LOL. heh.

The book club video is hilarious. I'm sure that is how a V.C. Andrews book club would turn out. I think the flowers in the attic series was the first and last set of trash novels I ever read! I think I need to get me some more trash to counteract all my years in college! :)

And yah, I saw the movie too. It was just plain weird. About all I remember was I think it was the mother who was pushed off a balcony in her wedding dress. If it was 1987 I would have been 14 at the time. lol

good times. lol

The Egyptian royals were again practicing brother-sister incest rather than parent-child incest. This is further confused by Egyptian kinship terms which do not match up exactly with those in modern English.
This is of course still not a good idea in the long run - there were 31 different ruling dynasties after all!
