Dear Metro

posted by on April 10 at 17:08 PM

Thank you for returning my wallet and credit cards, which were left on two different buses, in such a timely and professional fashion. I take back everything bad I ever said about you.

Dear assholes who stole my credit card and charged up hundreds of dollars at two convenience stores, Blockbuster, and Taco Time (?!?) and then ditched my wallet and cards on two different Metro buses: Fuck you very much.

That is all.

I lost my wallet on the bus last month. I waited for it to come back around on the route, but it never did. I called metro. They were amazing. The operator kept me on hold as she called all the drivers, none of which had it. I gave her my number, went to work and canceled all my cards. Then my phone rang it was the same metro operator, she'd found my wallet (the original bus had switched routes) and If I hurried I could catch it downtown on its way to Seattle.

15 minutes later, and 4 blocks of chasing the bus down I had my wallet, cards and money all back.

Total time separated from my wallet: 3 hours.

I think that is an amazing thing to have happen in a city this size.

Some people are still good.

This wouldn't happen if you lived in the suburbs.

What kind of person takes a stolen credit card to Taco Time?

Look, you can rely on the kindness of strangers in an urban blastzone where you're lucky strangers aren't dragging you into alleys and cutting out your heart to eat raw and pulsing and leaving the rest of you behind wastefully OR you can secure your damn wallet.

Quit blaming the offenders.

@1,

Seattle may technically be a big city, but in a lot of ways it's still a small town. One of the best things about it is that there are still great people who will do whatever they can to help you out in a situation like that.

Several years ago I somehow lost my driver's license. The person who found it Googled me, found my email address, and contacted me. It was pretty fucking amazing.

Did you lose your wallet on the bus or was it stolen from someplace else and disposed of on the bus?

Lesson: don't allow your wallet or credit cards to be stolen. Problem solved, crisis averted, bitchiness level back down to code yellow.

Sometimes I leave my wallet in my car by accident. No weird charges. Reason number #986 to own a car.

The thing that always blows me away about premeditated crime is that, while I understand in the abstract that people suck, I can never actually imagine someone making a conscious decision to -- for example -- use a pair of bolt cutters to break into my gym locker, and steal my wallet and the leather jacket my dad gave me. I mean, when I think about the kind of person who would do that, the whole thing about cutting a thief's hands off starts to make a lot more sense to me. A quick smash-and-grab I can at least understand: the action is completed almost before the intent is processed. But people who set out to fuck other people over are rally hard for me to understand, when I actually take the trouble to try and see things from their perspective.

Sorry to hear about this. If you don't have renters insurance, get it, and make sure that you have identity theft protection on it. Then you can hire a debt attorney to straighten all your credit back out so you don't have to spend the time to do it.

I took it, and then masturbated in front of some chick's window in Ballard. Next I'll be off taking pictures of girls' asses in QFC.

How do you know the consummate professionals at Metro weren't the ones who ran up your credit cards before your wallet was returned?

I lost a cell phone and long ago a pager on buses and both times Metro's lost and found had them. I think their system for objects lost on buses must be pretty good.

I had a similarly positive experience. I was on my way to the airport when the driver called my name over the PA -- huh?? It was only then that I realized that I'd forgotten my briefcase on the previous bus. The driver of that bus read the nametag and somehow figured out where I was going (maybe he saw me board?). Several stops later, the two buses were at the same stop again. The drivers had me run back to get my bag and then reboard.

They were super-courteous and helpful.

@9, yeah and why do girls complain all the time about getting raped? Have they ever tried just not being raped?

@4 & 9:
What the hell? You two need to learn to keep your mouths shut. But really, how dare ECB not keep her wallet in a padlocked safe at all times! She totally was just asking for it.

It's clear to me, though maybe not to everyone, that it was the THIEVES who left the wallet and credit cards on two different buses.

To ECB: that sucks, I'm glad you got your stuff back.

Well, I'm glad you got your stuff back. The competence of Metro re: lost and found items can be sporadic, so it's nice that you landed on top.

I am, however, disappointed that you missed Slog Happy tonight. I was looking forward to meeting you.

@ 23, she associated with me when she was in Denver and I invited her to. Just a couple of drinks with her and her boyfriend. She later slagged Denver as not being fashionable, but that's a fact so I don't mind. Anyway, that happened before she became the Slog lightning rod. I wouldn't be surprised if she never goes to one of those things ever.

Erica, I may not agree with your political views, but I must say my heart goes out to you- getting a wallet stolen is a heartbreaking experience... having your card run up just makes it that much worse.
