2008 Clinton as Rocky

onToday in Philadelphia:
“Rocky,” anthem of the underdog, and a Philly favorite to boot, rose up on the sound system Monday night at a Clinton rally in nearby Fairless Hills, Pa. Today, Mrs. Clinton has grabbed on to Rocky’s story as her own, telling labor leaders here that like him, she’s not a quitter.“Let me tell you something,” she said in remarks prepared for delivery later this morning to the A.F.L.-C.I.O. “When it comes to finishing the fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common. I never quit. I never give up. And neither do the American people… Could you imagine if Rocky Balboa had gotten half way up those Art Museum steps and said, ‘Well, I guess that’s about far enough?’”
But… Rocky lost. And then there’s the matter of this:

Well it makes sense. Rocky seemed to go from retarded to smart to retarded [again] an awful lot throughout the trainwreck movies.
Rambo would have killed his way out of the Hanoi Hilton, stolen a helicopter and single-handedly defeated the North Vietnamese.
Unlike that wuss, John McCain, who just sat there.
Being tortured.
is the working class underdog appeal to all those blue collar workers who have lost jobs in philly. though its changed a lot since i lived there, unlike seattle, philly still has a working class soul and it has not been completely taken over by newcomers.
like most of her latest strategies, it will most likely not work, but not a bad move.
'm not sure the abc analyst is right about rocky losing, thats too simplistic. the whole film is about how, eventhough, apollo won the fight, rocky won the battle. he came back from the dead. he made it up the museum stairs, blah, blah.. besides, rocky won in rocky 2.
And, just like Rocky (in the first movie), she will lose to the black man. Yes, quite an appropriate analogy.
Rocky's victories are just as fictional as hers.
If Rocky was really like Clinton, he would have claimed that he actually won the first fight and had grand stories about knocking out Apolo Creed. Then he would have claimed to have won an NBA Championship, a world series and a been Super Bowl MVP. Then, we would all get to watch reporters showing video of Rocky watching those games on TV.
I still prefer Maureen Dowd's Terminator comparison.
And just like Rocky, she would rather see McCain win than Obama.
You'd think Clinton would think twice about comparing herself to one of the great he-men of pop culture given her emasculatory reputation.
Um, well... I guess that would make Obama... Apollo Creed?
(waiting for the umpteenth scream about "injecting race" into the campaign)
So he CAN raise his arms!
I'd pay to see Dolph Lungren go nine rounds with Hillary.
Jesus, who writes her speeches? They're pretty consistently full of ham-handed crap like that...
I agree; that's a TERRIBLE speech, and a terrible analogy, badly delivered. It's idiotic pandering, of the "OK, Philly, what do I know about Philly? Rocky, yeah, that's the ticket" type. It's worse than "in it to win it". She really is a terrible speaker. Compare to virtually any delivery by her opponent (who actually makes you want to hear them again, and read them), or even her husband, who could at least make meaningless gibberish sound like intelligible speech.
So, when candidates start saying "I'm not a quitter, I never give up" that's when their candidacy is officially over.
She may lose this time but she gets five more chances.
