Breakfast of Champions

UPDATE: Folks want to know where they can get their hands on this new and already famous bacon—so I asked the person who forwarded me this picture, our own Aaron Edge, where he got it. And, uh, perhaps I should’ve asked Aaron that before I posted this picture. Anyway, Edge found it at How To Avoid the Bummer Life, which found the chocolate at Marini’s in Santa Cruz.

UPDATE 2: There’s no chocolate-covered bacon available for sale on Marini’s website, so I gave the store a call just to make sure it wasn’t a hoax.

Still selling chocolate-covered bacon?

Yes, we are.

Why can’t I order it via your website?

They only have selected items on the website, and the bacon is kind of new. We’ve only had it for a month or two.

How does it taste? Is it as good as it looks?

I don’t know. I don’t eat red meat.

But it’s not red. It’s brown.

True. But it’s really kind of a guy’s chocolate.

Like a stunt chocolate?

Yes.

Do you sell a lot of it?

Yes, it’s selling pretty good.

UPDATE 3: Aaron Edge has been a vegan for 17 years and he says he misses bacon more than anything.

How can something be New + Famous at the same time? there should be some regulation over what can and can't be called "famous".

Between this and the Twilight Exit's chicken-fried bacon, we've got the makings of some kinda Bacon Thanksgiving.

Posting this without citing a local source is irresponsible journalism. This is crap the P-I would do.

And we'll all drink these:

Bacon-infused old fashioneds.

It actually wasn't as bacony tasting as I expected. Next time more fat or less healthy bacon.

I'm with w7ngman. Bacon doesn't need anything on it except more bacon.

By far the best thing I have had in a while...

Bacon on top of maple bars. You half cook the bacon then layer it on maple bars. Put in the oven at 350 for 10 mins to warm the maple bars and cook the bacon a little more.... and viola'!

Seriously, it looks and sounds gross......but tastes so right.

@6 & @24:

Voodoo Donut in Portland has offered a bacon-maple bar combo for several years now. It's one of my must-haves whenever I'm in town.

And while I do agree that bacon by itself is truly paradise on earth, chocolate-covered bacon must surely be right up there as well - because, it's got bacon in it.

@6, Try Portland's Voodoo Doughnut Shop! They have the very best Maple Bars with Bacon on top! I also recommend the voodoo donut, and the cock and balls for special occasions!

@20: At $7 a bar, I'd hoped the Vosges bacon chocolate bar would have been like some sort of mouth epiphany. Instead it was just too salty. I threw the other half out.

Bacon with peanut butter is fucking delicious, y'all should try that shit

I was over at a client's the other night.

They're serving Chicken Fried Bacon!

The Bacon Vosges bar is unimpressive. I had a bacon chocolate somewhere else that was delicious but I can't remember where!

I thought I recognized that font - they're (obviously) a new item at Marini's Candies in Santa Cruz. The lady who answered the phone says they've been selling them about a month and they're selling pretty well. She was very nice so I did not ask her about the "famous" part. I'll have to sample some tomorrow when I'm downtown.

@31:

They must have seen that at The Twilight Exit. An order of CFB between two people is just too much - if only they'd offer say, a single slice of it on one of their burgers, that would be just about the right amount.

Hey, Dan, thanks for following up and getting us the facts.

Aaron, if it's any comfort, I had a vegetarian friend who, unbeknownst to me, was slowly going crazy with bacon lust watching me eat it every morning. Finally he gave in and ordered some himself, but it turned out he didn't like it anymore.

— Haha, no, no... I'm sure I'd still love it!
