Azariah Southworth

posted by on April 16 at 15:57 PM

Azariah Southworth is the host of a popular Christian TV show called The Remix. The show, a Christian music program, originates in Nashville and is seen in upwards of 128 million homes. Southworth, who is also the show’s producer, has helped launch, er, “major” Christian music acts “such as Jars of Clay, Avalon, Superchick, Building 429 and Rachael Lampa.”

Azariah Southworth just came out of the closet. Good for him, bad for his show.

“I know I will be cut off from many within the Christian community, and if so, then they didn’t get the point of the life of Christ. I believe by me living my life honestly and authentically now, I am able to be a better person and a better Christian. We all know there are so many other gay people in the Christian industry; they’re just all scared. I was scared, but now I’m no longer afraid,” notes Southworth.

No longer afraid—but likely to be unemployed soon.

He's CUTE. This is great for him, and great for the Christian entertainment and media complex.

It's nice to see somebody recognize it as an industry and not try to glorify it.

"I was scared, but now I am no longer afraid"

It shows great maturity and strong belief and guidance in christianity. That is something that christianity can, at times, successfully do(most religons for that matter) I support and congratulate him and suspect that he will be happier living a life reflective of who he is. It is sad that the current americanized version of christianity selects from the bible and scorns certain people. I would pray for him, but I am (failed) buddhist.

Good for him! I hope he finds a new job better than some crappy Christian show.

He's screwed. Telegenic gays have no hope of a future in the entertainment industry.

Apparently, Christian music is totally gay.

@6: I thought everybody knew that. All the "Christian" bands have giant boy-crushes on Jesus, and sing extremely personal songs about wonderfulness.

A guy who looks like a junior high school girl in drag and is a professional Southern Christian named Azariah Southworth is gay?

Gee -- what are the odds?

Jars of Clay had some semi-crossover success a decade or so with the single "Flood." It was actually pretty good, if you didn't know they were Christo-Rock.

Best of luck to this guy.

Oh, he'll lose his job. Meanwhile, the "christians" will rally to vote for John McCain, adulterer-in-chief (Matthew 19:9).

He also quit the full time job that it took to mask his true self.

Unemployment will find him well =]

This story makes me glad

why am i thinking about cartman's christian group "faith + 1"?

Cartman:(Singing)I want to get down on my knees and start pleasing Jesus, I want to feel his salvation all on my face... Cartman: (Singing) The Body of Christ!
Sleek swimmer's body, all muscled up and toned! The Body of Christ! O, Lord Almighty, I wish I could call it my own!
Cartman: You know, Jesus? I've been thinking a lot about you lately and, well, that's why I wrote this song. I love you, Jesus. I want you to walk with me. I'll take good care of you baby. Call you my baby, baby! You died for my sins, and you know that I would die for you, right? What's the matter, baby? You tremble at Jesus, baby! Your love… is my life! You know when I'm without you, there's a black hole in my life! Oo-ohhh! I wanna believe. It's all right, 'cause I get lonely in the night and it's up to you to Save me! Jee…sus…bay-by! (edit)

Good for him! I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

It would be great if this news causes at least a few young Christians to pause and think, "so, I'm supposed to hate him now because I know he's gay? Maybe my pastor/parents/televangelist is full of shit."

I was raised evangelical Christian, and the one thing that I noticed had the power to change church folks' minds about gays was when someone they knew and respected had the courage to come out. Maybe my experience was unique, but here's hoping this changes some minds, somewhere.

Correction: You mean "available to 128 million homes" not "is seen in 128 million homes."

The later means that Remix is the most watched show on television, which doesn't ring true.

I think there is no question his show is probably doomed. My question would be, do you think the gay community will be able to help him continue doing what he's doing?

All I'm saying is, Jesus walked around with 12 other dudes for most of his adult life, with nary a mention of a girlfriend in the Bible.

I'm very proud of him, and I hope this gets mainstream gay press.

He should take the job of that lesbian editor of Venus magazine, the one who became exgay. He could change the name to Adonis.

He'll lose his job because he has lost his purpose. Young Christian leaders use sexual attractiveness all the time to attract and then indoctrinate trying to morph that attraction into religious zeal. The hypnotized young women (or young men) don't realize they're being manipulated. They think they're getting wet because they've let the spirit into their hearts.

It doesn't just work on young people. Look at the audience for Joel Osteen - young to middle-aged women mostly who listen to his sermon ready to offer their hard nipples up to Jesus when in fact what they really want to do is fuck the shit out of Osteen. But you can't want that and be a good Christian.

The show is out of Nashville - a city that is not known for knocking down barriers. It's doubtful the producers want to use Southworth to attract a gay audience, and frankly, gay Christians don't usually attract gays who aren't. Southworth is now Katharine Hepburn in "Suddenly, Last Summer."

Um...I think you need to get your facts straight before you publish. I promise you Azariah Southworth has NOT helped launch acts like Jars of Clay and Avalon. He was a CHILD when those groups began.

And, as a person in the industry, IN NASHVILLE, no one has even HEARD of this kid. Now a lot of people ask for his section at Logan's Road House???

What gives???? Who cares!

Bauhaus, great post. i agree entirely. i'm not sure they really know what they are doing -- but is that overly optimistic and naive?

either way, when i was growing up in church it was so obvious it was painful. many a church was worse than school for glorification of beauty, fashion, success, and conformity. which seemed to me to almost polar to the teaching you heard. fortunately, the next pretty face quickly distracted me from the dissonance.

Anyone who thinks he is being "true to himself" does not really know him. He is deceived and anyone else who thinks this is deceived. I know Azariah personally.

bobbie -- are you saying he doesn't know himself? or rather, are you saying you know him better than he knows himself?

Azariah ,The son of my right hand whom God helpeth!! God will even help you out of this deception.Gay is what you are not. You are to help deliver people like this, and call them out of darkness.I call you out of darkness and the Lord establish you and set your feet on a solid foundation. My heart is fixed trusting in the Lord for your complete deliverence.Buy the truth and sell it not.
