These pit bull posts are like when an armed maniac takes hostages but refuses to say what his demands are.

(Happy NRA Day, now that I mention it.)

every time i read these pitbull stories, i constantly remind myself to buy a can of canine repellent so I don't end up being mauled by some dog.

Amy Kate's dog still rules.

All of the pit bull arguments on here have seemed kinda half-hearted lately. Maybe people are becoming bored with them. I don't know - just my $.02.

Ditto in re: fixed gear bikes posts.

Like someone said a few weeks ago: Pitbulls seem to attract asshole owners just as hip-hop nights attract people with guns.

Dont blame the music!

yes, but dogs are not, you know, people. or music, for that matter. or guns.

In other Michigan news, the naked body of a partially-burned man was found at the park near my Ann Arbor home this morning! The latest is that he's still alive. I hear the news helicopters overhead. Lovely!

@4 . yeah. but how many times can you argue the exact same thing? it gets boring after a while, and you realize the discussions are pointless.

This article does go to show that *any* breed of dog can be weaponized: bulldogs (not pit bull terriers, which is what "pit bull" means, but but bulldogs, which are a completely different breed) are widely regarded as one of the best family breeds, good with kids, intelligent, responsive to human emotions, etc.

It could be that the reporter is misreporting the breeds, however; there is a lot of confusion about what a "pit bull" is and what "bulldogs" are.

In any dog attack, the human owner is responsible for raising or failing to train/socialize the dog, and the felony charges here are terrific news. They should be more common.

It's called a "metaphor".

@11. yes, while any breed can be weaponized, some are more effective weapons that others. and some are used more frequently in that manner. since pit bulls specifically account for the vast majority of dog-related deaths and maimings, there should be special laws applied to the owners and ownership of pit bulls specifically.

yeah, dan, what is your point with these posts? all pits in the world should be euthanized? their owners are either scum or fools? so, all those many sweet and submissive pits i've met (upwards of 70 by now) should all be killed, and their seemingly reasonable owners are really just jackasses or worse? if that's what you're implying here, why not just come out and say it?

I know lots of places have banned pit bulls. I think Denver banned them back when I lived there 15 or 20 years ago. So there should be good data showing whether or not total dog attacks decreased or if they just switched so some other breed and the carnage continued.

Anyone?

@12. yes, but not all metaphors are created equal. breeds of dogs may have certain traits that are not on a parallel with traits among music genre fans. for instance, physical size alone distinguishes a pit pull from a chihuahua. so unless you are comparing fans of hip-hop to fans of raphi, it's a poor comparison. nonetheless, yes, there is usually more security at any given hip-hop show then any give raphi show.

@15, I can't remember the last time I heard of a dog attack within the Denver city limits, now that you mention it. Not aware of any statistics on that though.

Denver banned pit bulls in 1989, the a Colorado state law tried to overrule that in 2004, but the courts upheld Denver's law. So there should be data on whether or not the rate of dog attacks went up or down during the last 19 years of having pit bulls banned in a city with a half million people. Surrounded by suburbs with another half million people where pit bulls are not banned.

But as far as I can tell, there is no data. That's a shame. Guess it's just a matter of opinion then.

Oops. I guess that I was wrong. People are ready and willing to argue this point ad nauseum.

Also, just to bring people down a little, my 13 year old pit bull/ american bulldog mix had a stroke recently and had to be put down on Saturday. She was the best dog I've ever had.

I want a pack of weaponized Yorkies. They'll kick your ass - or at least untie your shoes!
