dogs arent people therefore I can't care about this very much. it's sad that people only get outraged when something is spoonfed to them.

Dogs aren't people, but that doesn't matter. Stupid ass.

They've got no part in this war. They didn't ask to have their nation invaded any more than the Iraqis did. Killing dogs is tantamount to killing civilians.

Over the past four years I've gone from "Ok with Afghanistan war" to "not so sure about Iraq" to "not supporting Iraq but I guess the troops are OK" to "I fucking hate the administration and all the stupid fucks in the army."

Videos like this confirm my conviction that the only people in the military are sociopaths or just stupid.

ASPCA? I'd hope the US Army would frown upon this and court martial their asses all the way to 25 to life, but I know better than that.

What is your malfunction Bellevue ave. Even as a non dog person this just makes me angry and worried about their being any psychopathic soldiers fighting in the mid east.
I know this doesn't reflect the majority of our soldiers fighting or in the military but these types of people should have been weeded out long before they even enlisted.
There is no excuse for this stupid blood lust.
I hope some day those soldiers eat shit with their mouths sewn shut.

I don't care if it reflects the majority. It IS the majority as far as public perception is concerned:

Bad: Haditha, Abu Ghirab, KILLING FUCKING DOGS, multiple one-off stories about civilian deaths/mass executions.

Good: Tillman (Later found to be killed by friendly fire, not "valiantly running into battle" as administration first said), Lynch (Later found to be completely made-up/embellished by administration).

If someone could correlate the videos of the people killing the dogs with news stories of these same soldiers being KIA, I'd rest at ease.

Did I just say "rest at ease"? Sounds a bit too military; replace it with the phrase of your choosing... "in peace" sounds like I'm dying, so let's suggest "sleep soundly" or its ilk.

you need people that are willing to disregard human life in the military. it is part of what makes a marine, a marine; they can kill when needed without thought. they are trained to be "psychopaths" because that is part of the job description.

a marine throwing a dog off a cliff isnt that surprising nor is it really that news worthy. i'd be more distrubed if some little old lady down the street did this because it wouldnt fit the personality profile of that person.

anyway, there are Shoot on sight orders for many animals in Iraq because of the disease and surliness of animals there.

Still doesn't make it alright Bellvue Ave. What if A Marine started shooting up a Top Pot and killed everyone inside. Would that be part/ result of his training on becoming a uncaring psychopath soldier, you know to weed out any enemy undesirables or for shits and giggles.

@14: You're upset that Bellevue Ave doesn't have more compassion for dogs, so now you wouldn't mind if he were "shot, bombed, or thrown off a cliff"? Where is the logic in that? You certainly haven't made your point.

I agree that soldiers have to be able to kill things. It's in their job descriptions. Only people who are capable of killing other people (or animals, or whatever they're told to kill) should sign up to be in the military, because if they're not capable of that, well they're not really what we're looking for in a defense system.

The people over there are under extreme stress: their lives are threatened, people they know are constantly being killed or injured, they have no idea when they can come home and are probably starting to doubt the reason they went there in the first place. If they take that agression and frustration out on dogs, well, at least it isn't prisoners. At least it isn't civilians.

For the people shocked that these are the type of people in the military: Who did you think was in the military? Do you have any concept of history and the type of people who actually fight in wars? There are two types of people who fight: the ones who are threatened directly and must defend their homes and selves, and the people who sign up because they have it in them to fight. To kill. How is this surprising?

it isnt right, but it isnt the outrage or surprise of the year and it isnt going to change much.

if a marine killed a bunch of top pot folks i would feel really bad because for a mutlitude of reasons. a puppy just doesnt have those reasons behind it

It's fairly well established that cruelty to animals - especially wanton, sadistic cruelty - is a marker for later violence to humans.

That means that the people who are doing this now may be that many steps closer to abducting/torturing/killing you/your loved one/your child-sibling-friend etc. once they return home and are living amongst us, undetectable except for a troubling gleam in their eye when it lingers a little too long during a casual glance.

And what did the people living in the house next door think about this? Oh wait, we don't care apparently.

This is why I DON'T support the troops, nor do I support War and those that think violence solves problems. When soldiers start killing animals for fun and entertainment they are sub-human and should be called on it. It must be understood that the dogs are parasite infested, undernurished, poorly treated, and doomed to a horrible death. Solders laughing at the suffereing of these animals is repulsive and an abomination.

People are oblivious to reality. The military's sole function is to kill and break things. They are the improper personnel to rebuild a nation. That is the reason we need to withdraw them. They've has done their job, it's time to get them out and bring in the nation-builders.

It's like using the demolition team to build a house. At a certain point, you gotta bring in the carpenters.

Failure to do so will lead to further destruction, such as dog killing.

I won't watch the videos. I already heard about them from my 12 year old daughter who said to me last night "mom.. i really don't like soldiers any more. do you know why?" Pretty easy to sit back in the comfort and safety of our homes and judge the people who are risking their lives every day in the streets of Iraq.

To go to war and to lose your sense of decency and compassion because of the realities of combat is a huge sacrifice. These guys deserve pity every bit as much condemnation.

Shame on the people who think veterans of this war have no business coming home. Are you really suggesting they should just move under the bridge with all the poor guys that survived Vietnam?

It isn't even that, Bellevue. This isn't an impulse for them, it's a "funny" sport. They're having a blast killing dogs. If you think our soldiers "having a blast killing dogs" isn't news, you're a fucking idiot.

We're on WW watch right now because of this idiotic war, and although you think we're only seeing what we're being spoonfed, you should (obviously) consider that that's what the rest of the world is seeing too. Look at our soldiers: what are they doing? This.

you need people that are willing to disregard human life in the military. it is part of what makes a marine, a marine; they can kill when needed without thought. they are trained to be "psychopaths" because that is part of the job description.

Right. And I can't fly because I don't have wings. So, we don't need "soldiers", we need more members of Schutzstaffel.

a marine throwing a dog off a cliff isnt that surprising nor is it really that news worthy.

look, what they were doing is inhuman. common sense tells everyone that basic fact. if this is the image our soldiers are given than it's a huge propaganda loss for the usa and ultimately this "war on terror" is going to boil down to what people believe, ie, the jurisdiction of propaganda. if you don't think this behavior is a big deal your kidding yourself.

This wasn't anyone's dog, mine or yours, so why push such a hypothetical? if it was my dog i'd be upset but who wouldnt? its a stupid point because of the outpouring of outrage isn't about the personal relationship everyone had with this dog.

the reasons i'm not outraged are many; random dog, expected marine behavior, no experience with dogs, the hysterics of other people over this, so on and so forth.

I don't need a personal relationship to care about the death of a dog that wasn't hurting anybody, nor do I need one to care about the death of an actor who never felt like he was on top of the world.

Um. I'm with Bellevue Ave, here -- this stuff is awful, sure, but in the grand scheme of what the same guys are doing to human beings over there, it pales, frankly to insignificance. It actually infuriates me that *this* is what finally outrages anyone about our military involvement over there.

I love dogs and puppies, too, but our country's weird, pathological obsession with domesticated pet animals goes to a whole sick new low when this kind of animal abuse is somehow more notable and outrageous than rape, murder, torture and mutilation of human beings.

War sucks really really bad. In order to be able to not be shitting your pants 100% of the time you need to transform yourself into a person that isn't bothered by looming death, a person who can still go on after seeing your friends blown up, a person who can kill people you don't know for the notion of "good". I would imagine once you become a person like that and live like that for awhile killing a few mangy dogs isn't that big of a deal.

For a person like me who lives on the eastside without anyone ever trying to kill me these videos are shocking and abhorrent. But i have pity for these soldiers and what they have transformed into because of what our nation has decided to do in iraq. War turns people into monsters and for that, we as a nation are all responsible.

i can feel more for a group of people wronged and hurt more than an individual. Mostly because individual deaths are not abnormal, are not surprising, are within the scope of every day living. genocide, mass murder, calculated rape and mutilation is so far beyond the scope of that though that they truly do warrant my interest and disdain.

@ 19
Did you look at the videos? Where's the logic in shooting, bombing and throwing rocks at stray dogs? Where's the logic in throwing a puppy off a cliff? I wasn't being logical, I was throwing BA's words back at him to show how stupid they were. Yes, soldiers have to be able to kill - but not anything, anytime. OK, it's stressful - but don't take it out on helpless animals who haven't a clue why they are being tormented, maimed and killed. Whatever humans choose to do to each other is fine with me - just leave the animals alone.

Don't care because it's "just a dog"? Well, what happens when private fucked-up comes home? When he starts drinking heavily or doing drugs? Starts beating his wife and kids? Starts killing more than dogs?

a normal person doesnt torture animals for fun but it isnt surprising that a abnormal human who is conditioned to disregard life does.

i dont see how mental health support when a soldier comes home relates to people being upset about this. would the puppy have been thrown regardless of mental health support at home? i think it would have.

also the selection bias of "people who hurt animals will then hurt humans" is strong among people here. What about all the people who hurt animals that don't go on to hurt people? Do they exist?

Ugh. Where to begin.

Did anyone bother to read Peter F's comment @46? You know, the calm, respectful, decent one? How about 50, that one was pretty good, too.

While this may be a little too nuanced for some of you, Bellevue Ave isn't arguing that killing dogs is a good thing, or an acceptable thing. All he's saying is, with all the horrible monstrosities taking place in this war, it's a littly silly to let crimes against DOGS upset you more than you're upset by crimes against PEOPLE.

Lloyd's argument about valuing human life over the life of other animals is the only one that's actually on-point with Bellevue's arguments.

@54: So, you're going one further than Lloyd and arguing that a dog's life is more important than Bellevue Ave's life? That's charming.

Ive always thought you can tell a lot about a society (or people) on how they treat their dogs. In the border towns of Mexico the people are treated like shit, underfed and ignored, so are their dogs. These soldiers are forced to shoot and kill and do horrible horrible things, so whats another dog? Especially if its hungry, dying or crippled. I worked in an orphanage in Romania where I saw the aftermath of four 8-12 year old girls literally RIP apart a litter of puppies a day after they were born. Why? Were they psychotic? Angry? Disturbed? Probably but I think they also cant tell the difference and dont know the difference...

you know why child manipulation in those videos is worse than killing a puppy? a puppy doesn't grow up and have the same potential ability to destroy life and hurt other people. the death of a puppy upsets americans, the manipulation and psych games on children inspires those children to do the same goddamn thing.

and people getitng all riled up about the puppy will make the military clamp down on shit like the gratuitous killing of animals, but animals will still be killed and children will still be exploited and manipulated into being just like those marines

No #64, what Bellevue doesn't understand is that the whole package, this fucked up occupation, is just that, fucked up, and here are our soldiers, supposedly winning heart and minds, blowing up fucking innocent dogs. Great way to get the world on our side. They've already seen what we've done to humans and thought that was probably our limit, but it wasn't, now they get to see that not only are we killing humans like they are mosquitos on the wall, oh no, thats not enough, we'll blow your fucking dog up too.
The outrage isn't just about the dog videos Bellevue, its compounded on top of the utter outrage we already feel.
Get a clue Bellevue.

I could not have said it better. Bellevue Ave is being a fucking troll yet again.

compounding your outrage? so a lot of you were that ignorant before you saw the video?

and to further my points at 77/78 and 80:

I find it rewarding to antagonize and belittle others points in an asinine way; it makes me feel even better than I know I already am. You all are beneath me, your concern for dogs is plebeian and unworthy. I know and feel things you will never understand... you silly people with your emotions. I care for humanity better than you dog lovers.

#79 is right. Quit feeding the troll, people. It only makes him want attention that much more.

I think there's been some "missing the point" here regarding the outrage that many of us feel. as humans, we are stewards of this planet, of all creatures great and small; moreover, one of the things that makes us human is our capacity to feel compassion and empathy for those under our stewardship, to understand that vulnerable creatures need protection. people capable of treating the vulnerable --puppies, cats, children, girls, women, whomever--with such disregard, have lost a fundamental capacity to feel empathy, somehow making them in many's eyes, "inhuman." even the great apes are capable of compassion and protection of the vulnerable and those who/that are strangers.

Bellevue.... i know you're concerned about the children. Your humanitarianism is so obvious. But yes, it's okay to insult assholes if you want. Not to prove a point, but just for the sheer fun of it, ASSWIPE...now i will quit feeding the sucking hole troll.

dearest troll:
just because you're unemployed, living with your mother, and filled with childish, abstract rage: you need not refashion yourself as a fucking provacateur for the sheer hell of it. grow the fuck up.

okay, i'm done too.

seems like only the people insulting me are filled with rage. i find it humorous that people are more wrapped up in who I am and what I do than the topic at hand. I'm no troll and people who claim such just don't have anything of note to say.

grace, this compassion and stewardship is relegated to only things that are cute. aesthetically pleasing animals and people get better treatment than others and there is a biological basis for that. there isnt any inherent stewardship imperative in us. thats a cognitive concept.

"This wasn't anyone's dog, mine or yours, so why push such a hypothetical? if it was my dog i'd be upset but who wouldnt? its a stupid point because of the outpouring of outrage isn't about the personal relationship everyone had with this dog.

the reasons i'm not outraged are many; random dog, expected marine behavior, no experience with dogs, the hysterics of other people over this, so on and so forth."

as someone who served in the military i can tell you that throwing puppies off cliffs is not "expected marine behavior"; even the marine corps states they don't condone this soldier's behavior. try another argument.

the "outpouring of outrage" is around the behavior not the relationship. while it is the job of a soldier to kill that job only starts when someone is trying to kill the soldier or the soldier has been ordered to kill. i doubt this soldier was given the order to toss puppies off cliffs while being recorded. this is a case of psychotic behavior, which people are outraged at and rightly so.

Behold, war.

Maybe after watching these, some of you understand it better now and won't be in such a hurry to start the next one.

Don't blame the soldiers, or Bellevue, blame yourself.

I was one of the guys who found these links, before they were sent to thestranger...

we actually sent videos of soldiers hurting/killing/terrorizing civilians as well, but it seems thestranger didnt feel it was appropriate to link to.

So although- yeah, dogs are not as important as humans- please know (or search yourself on liveleak) there are worse videos out there.

The biggest problem- is that these are ONLY THE VIDEOS that soldiers taped and uploaded themselves. It scares the crap outta me to think of what they DID NOT record, or put on liveleak.

Bellevue- youre an idiot.

@88, you are on the wrong blog if you think most of us supported invading Iraq or were "in a hurry" to start the war.

Bellevue Ave is like a needy little puppy. Yip, yip, pay attention to me!! Apparently they love little puppies over in Iraq, Bellevue. I think you should consider a visit.

Yes, because I call bullshit on people being so profoundly affected by this expected and sad incident, I should die myself.

And people think I'm the one that needs help.

"That is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life", says one of the soldiers. Insane.

I almost couldn't bring myself to watch these, and I definitely can't bring myself to watch the ones above involving civilians/kids.

I know plenty of soldiers and this is not "standard behavior" as some have implied. Christ...

I don't even know why I am posting anything on this website. I was just reading some of the comments and realized something. It is much deeper than a Marine tossing a puppy over a cliff, it's about the support we recieve from the American people. One bad story surfaces about the military and the public thrives, but they overlook the fact that we are winning the war in Iraq. When was the last time you heard about gunfights erupting in the streets of Fallujah, or a massive IED killing half a dozen soldiers. People are forgeting about the important story. I appreciate some of the comments that support me and my fellow marines, but it disgusts me that there are Americans out there that are not so supportive. I hope you all are enjoying sitting comfortably in your own homes criticizing our every bad move and not seeing the good. I am not bitching about being over here, hell I volunteered to come back because I know the good we are doing for the Iraqi people, I am just so irate after reading some of the anti-military comments. Those people have no clue. We have our bad apples just like every where you go. You need to stop dwelling on one stupid Marine's fuck up and start focusing on the positive note that we are on our way out of Iraq. Thank you to all of you that are supporting us and to the hell with everyone that doesn't.
