Did the US get suckered by Al-Sadr or were we late on a blackmail payment to him? Maybe if we could get him elected to office, he'd lose his popularity and be killed - definitely a situation where our being there is resulting in this guy having power.

So, how does McCain spin this, seeing as he said the surge is going swell and he has tied his candidacy to the �success� of the war. Just a big uptick in violence in Iraq doom McCain? One would assume so, huh?

TCO, McCain's position is that if things are going badly, we need to keep troops in to stabilize things. If things are going well, then that's because of our troops and we can't have them leave or things will get bad again--and we have to protect our "embassies" and oil supplies.

It's a neat formula because it doesn't require any knowledge about the factions or events in Iraq. The answer is always the same: keep the troops there forever.

The reality, of course, is that events will eventually spiral out of control and our soldiers will be forced to leave regardless. So we might as well have them come home ASAP to save as many lives as possible.

@4 Will: I hear you.

It's so lovely being on SS disability and to know that in 10 years or so they're likely to tell me that spinal arthritis doesn't count anymore. If they wanted Social Security to save money then they should have it so that the company that makes my medicine can't charge Medicare 1,763$ a month for two doses.
