That's a great strip. Thanks for sharing.

This is posted in conjunction with an NPR piece I heard yesterday on the character of Long Duck Dong. It was pretty interesting...

"I can’t tell if the strip is from 2001 or 2007"

Maybe just read the NPR page?

"In 2001, graphic novelist Adrian Tomine (Shortcomings) published a pungent one-page comic describing his own history with the legacy of Long Duk Dong."

(note: he was interviewing Gedde for an issue of Giant Robot.)

My main problem with sixteen candles is the part where Jake Ryan, the supposed nice guy, gives his unconcious girlfriend to a random guy who has sex with her, and then no one seems to think there was anything wrong iwth it.

I feel your pain, Adrian. I woke up at 3 am this morning to watch the baseball game (such a fucking waste of time and energy, I know) and in the very first inning, the announcer said that Kurt Suzuki, the A's catcher, was making a "homecoming" to Japan. Uh, I think the fact that he was born in America and lives in California made this a..."there-going".

And I just know that when Kristi Yamaguchi loses to some hot guy on Dancing With the Stars, it'll read "American beats Yamaguchi in TV dance contest."

Remember, Japanese (and many other asian nations) citizenship is based on blood (Jus sanguines), not on where one is born (jus soli).

oh yeah and speaking from an insensative lily white lower income sunova be-ach who never got to enjoy any fruits of white privalage and resents being resented and guilt tripd just because of my skin coler....I find racial humor absolutly hilarious...liberating even. at least donger was played by an asian instead of mick rooney

Have you read "American Born Chinese"? It's a fantastic comic that goes into great depth about the Asian American Experience, whatever that is.

Shortcomings was great. I would totally recommend it, and it's available from SPL. Anyone know what the deal is with the cliff hanger ending, will it continue?

Sadly, while linus is scaring everyone, he's more right than many people realize.

It's weird thinking about how people thought back then ... but they did.

Left Coast, that wasn't a cliffhanger ending. That was a too-ambiguous ending. And it was the end. I loved it up 'till there, but the lack of an ending really pissed me off.

Gedde Watanabe? He was great in "UHF".
"Supplies!"
