Slog - Comments on Top-Two Primary

Yesterday I posted this, arguing that the new top-two primary could make life difficult for U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott (D-7), particularly now that he's looking a little silly. I should add to the list of now-uncomfortable, formerly invulnerable Democrats, KC Executive Ron Sims whose "maverick" views on light rail among other recent flights may set him up as a target too....

Will, you're missing the point. Ron has nothing to fear from a Sierra Club candidate (does anyone else really want light rail on 520?) trying to set up on his left. The big threat to Ron is a suburban Democrat who can run to his right and pick up Republican voters, suburban Ds, and independents.

@7 - who said it was a Sierra Club candidate? I'm just saying that the openness of the Top-Two Primary makes it almost certain someone will consider running against him ... especially if he stays in his Clinton supporting camp.

Electoral politics is about people - what they want, how much support they can get, and what is possible - if somebody in the entire King County wants to run but to date has not been willing to go up against an incumbent, this gives them a way around it, because they can run to get the other Top Two spot.

And when the elected incumbent is out of sync with the desires of his electoral area, it's far more likely they'll run.

I'm still figuring out how speaking out against the Iraq invasion when it might have done some good is supposed to be embarrassing for McDermott, regardless of whose dime the trip was made on. And what's with the "Baghdad Jim" crap? What are you, Dennis Miller?

Whatever you may think of his other policy stands, McDermott was right about that particular issue. At a time when many others in the Congress probably realized the case being made for war was bullshit but were too gutless to say so (paging Senator Clinton!) for fear of being called unpatriotic, McDermott provided one of the only audible dissenting voices. By continuing to slam McDermott for this you're proving the weasels and triangulators right -- better to play along with a trumped-up war and cry crocodile tears about the disaster when it's too late to do anything about it than to stand up for principle when it mattered and be forever labeled a collaborator.

I thought Sims wasn't up until next year.

Hasn't Bob Ferguson talked in the past about challenging him? I wouldn't be surprised if he did this time - the top two system makes it more interesting. Of course, if an R could get 34% of the vote, they make it in. Conversely, you could have R's who cross over to vote for someone like Ferguson, if they figure the R wouldn't stand a chance. That would kind of change in strategy makes it all the more intriguing.
