On the 5th Anniversary of the War in Iraq

posted by on March 19 at 12:00 PM

Bush defends his decision.

Obama assails it (attacking Clinton and McCain in the process).

Clinton sends out an attack video and touts her support among military generals.

Protesters march in D.C.

Cheney says: “So?”

And McCain sees American “on the precipice of winning a major victory.”

Where's the post about how silly protesters are? It's an annual tradition!

Precipice is right. McCain's entire political career hangs on the idea that we're winning in Iraq, which is a ludicrous interpretation. "The surge is working" is the meme, but it doesn't really have anything to do with us (and there never actually was any surge in troop numbers). The ceasefire is over, and the bloodletting is moving back up. By November, McCain will be riding this war to a unprecedented defeat, one that makes Goldwater or Mondale look like triumphs.

Erymas

Hometown: Troy

Age: Unknown

Died: 13th or 12th c. BCE (?)

Unit: Trojans

Incident: Struck in mouth by ruthless spear of brave Idomeneus; the steely point under the brain went onward, white the bones scattr'd etc. etc. And the black cloud of death enwraped him round. Thus slew these Danaan chieftans each his man.

Just because we declare victory, doesn't mean we accomplished anything worthwhile, moral, or good.

And what about McCain not knowing the difference between Sunni and Shiite regarding Iran and al Qaeda?

Um, doesn't Barack mean "clear, unambiguous CERTAIN terms" in that video?

Ah, military generals!

Can't have that kind around, can we? Even the ones who opposed Bush's war first and most fiercely, and were quickest to identify his post-invasion blunders?

No, better to swear alleginace to Obama and the phalanx of straw men that form the backdrop of each of his grandiloquent speeches.

Ignore the depression, the falling US currency, and the massive debt and vote for us!

only BHO will stop this, and it will take him his entire first term to do it.

once he's done it, the GOP will blame him for losing & destroying our (illusion of) hegemony, & we'll have a cornpone theocrat reactionary like Huckabee for president in 2012.

this country fucked itself. fucked fucked fucked.

So what you're saying is, the status quo is being faithfully maintained.

What's not to like about a war that has cost about 4000 American lives outright and 20,000 or so more seriously wounded, a few trillion dollars and international good will towards the US? Of course, the few hundred thousand dead Iraqi's and the few million Iraqi refuges don't count for much.

The only real problem with the war as far as I can tell is that it has made Al Qaeda, so much stronger. They had no friends whatsoever, much less a presence in Iraq until we invaded. Now, it's their primary training ground. Iran has been the primary beneficiary of our invasion and occupation, but they are our friends who hosted so many of our diplomats back in 1980, right?

Rolling tanks across borders into countries presenting us no threat at all and then occupying them for 5 years so far and 95 more if Grandpa McCain gets his wish places us in the big league company of pre-world-war-II Germany and post-world-war-II Soviet Union. That's fast company indeed! Being viewed world wide as the primary threat to world peace should be a badge of honor that will strike fear in the hearts of countries with no nukes all around the world (though it might inspire them to develop nukes, just in case).

Let's all celebrate the great victories in Iraq. Then set to work to pay for the rebuilding of our depleted military, just in case we need it to fight some enemy who could harm us.
