The Other Election

Ancient is the problem with being the messenger:

A senior Zanu-PF source has told a BBC contributor that security officials met on Sunday to decide who should tell Mr Mugabe he had lost, with some refusing to take the job.

The ruling party of Zimbabwe desperately needs a messenger, but none close to the party’s leader, Mugabe, wants the role because good things never happen to the one who brings bad news to the king.

C'mon, Chuck, do you really think he'll give up power? I mean, he lost last time too, but this time, he had the foresight to print up more than three million extra ballots. Maybe he'll acknowledge an electoral defeat, but won't that just push him from being an ostensibly democratic authoritarian to a blatantly autocratic authoritarian relying on nothing more than his control of guns to steady his power? Really, aren't we looking at Algeria all over again?
