Money Remember: You Can’t Spell “Recession” Without “Recess”

HAVE YOU, IN recent months, found yourself drinking less and exercising more? If you smoke, have you cut back? Have you been spending more time with your kids, or stopping in more frequently on your aging parents or grandparents? Have you lost weight? Does the air seem cleaner, the roads less crowded?
If so, you may be feeling the effects of the recession. A slowing economy, some economists suggest, can actually help you live longer - just one of a few payoffs that might surprise those of us who see recessions as unmitigated disasters.
From those sunny optimists at the Boston Globe.

The Boston Globe is such shit. It used to be so cool. What happened, Globe?
Nothing like homelessness to make one appreciate fresh air.
recessions arent disasters to begin with. they are essential in rooting out poorly performing businesses and improving efficiencies that are thrown out of wack in boom times.
The bad part is eating less fruit and vegetables. Cause inflation (up to 40 percent) makes those expensive.
Remember when milk cost half what it did? Yeah, I do too - that was last year.
Where's that photo from? How about a Stranger staff photo using the same idea? Quick trip up to the Cascades in the spring...
happiness of the katakuris is about as bonkers as the assertion of a recession making one healthier
@5: A Japanese murder-comedy called The Happiness of the Katakuris.
The rising food prices do suck.
Other than that though, I'm all about this recession. I'm crossing my fingers for some lower housing prices. And on a vindictive note, I'm happy to see all the people living beyond their means and contributing to this country's obsession with wealth get their comeuppance. Few people beyond the banking and real estate industry have lost their jobs so far. Which means that unless you've spent the past 5 years making poor financial decisions or taking advantage of the people making said decisions, you don't have much to worry about.
It makes me think there might be a little fairness left in the world yet.
Wheeeee!!!
in 1929 it was only stockbrokers throwing themselves out of windows at first....dont worry, it'll start to trikle down more and more until the economic levee's break
You know what, I have been smoking and drinking less, and I've lost about five pounds! I've also been vomiting with disturbing regularity and haven't been able to keep down solid food for three days. Is it a recession ... or salmonella?
See, folks? Recession isn't so bad! ... unless you sincerely believe can't live without your excesses.
4. Cow milk bad. Soy milk good.

Nah. In 1929 the behavior of economic markets was still largely a mystery. We have a much better understanding of how to regulate the economy now. As a result, it is unlikely that we will have to ride the rails or live in hobo camps anytime soon barring some huge disaster like a nuclear attack or alien invasion.
This is just a long overdue correction to a system that has overextended itself.
But I have my bindle ready, just in case.
My blood pressure has been rising in synch with inflation, so I take issue with the article.
