Great post... We got our dog from a rescue society that used a foster system and it was such a good experience. They interviewed us, and matched us to a dog that fit our living situation and activity level. It was great having someone who could tell us all about the dog's personality and temperment.

When we move to a bigger place, I definitely want to foster some of their dogs.

Also, if you're going to get a dog as a pet, please go to a shelter or rescue society rather than a breeder. Even if you want a specific breed (as we did), there are breed rescues for many breeds and a handy search function on petfinder.org that allow you to find an adoptable dog. It took us a few weeks longer, but we got exactly the breed and age we wanted...

It's a good thing your not on the early bus to the vet little poochie...( an affectionate name for an unknown pet and it's owner).... cause you wouldn't get there if you came to the bus stop in kirkland at the library on time.....rant rant rant... the bus (2:10 TO SEATTLE... NOT YUMA HEH HEH HEH THE EVIL VOICE OF GEORGE BUSH SAYS QUIETLY TO HIMSELF).... are early and then they won't stop but we love seattle mass transit anyway don't we kids cause they're better than battleships and bombs.

and another thing.... I'll be suprised or really pissed if this posts cause I got a notice as I posted the last stranger picture.... Obama Clinton Dan and Kim story and it said I posted too many times today which I find highly improbable cause the stranger is to cool to kick us off capital hill.

and another thing the clock keeps resetting at the king county library for me like I don't know the difference as I watch the computer screen... yes I'm talking about the clock on the computer screen not the clock on the wall.

I would never dare put up such a well-meaning but snoozy post... but I'm glad you did and I'm 100 percent behind the tireless animal rescue folks. I can't believe people buy dogs when there are so many who need homes, and I was shocked learn that some pet stores in the 'burbs still peddle puppies... WTF?!?! Who wants a puppy, anyway? More chewing and pooing in the house than I have the patience for. Adopt an adult dog, whose personality is a known factor and who will love you twice as much for giving him a better home.

Every dog that gets rescued means another dog gets it. Dog breeders should surely be shut down, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a better example of the thoughtlessness and selfishness of Americans than the prodigious rate at which pets have to be put down because people keep producing more of them than they need.

I love you for this post. NOT because you're a twenty something seattle hottie. Really.

Thanks Julie, Dawn-Marie, Amy Kate and Mike in MO (I think, unless you're making fun of me).

I have no problem with snoozy. I'd rather be boring and right than exciting and wrong. That whole uproar over the soldier videos is just another example of people who claim to care about animals when really they only care about the ferocity of their own outrage.

@9. Totally agree. We got a 2 year old, who was young enough to still act like a puppy, but wasn't nearly as much work. Plus, he was rescued from a truly depressing situation and, weird as it sounds, really seems to be more grateful and devoted than a typical dog.

$375 adoption fees? WTF?!? That's not dog rescuing, that's dog selling.

The reason the adoption fees seem so high to some are because of the amount of money the rescue group has to put in to get these dogs rescued. We have to pay to rescue the dog, pay to transport it to Seattle, pay all the vet bills, grooming, meds, food, bedding, training... all that so that when someone adopts these guys it's more of a dream come true than a "task" as some people seem to think having a dog is. I completely agree with Julie, these dogs are more grateful and devoted than your typical dog. They realize that someone has given them a chance.

I'm currently fostering 5 dogs. Each one of them came from a puppy mill located in Yakima where an 87 year old lady had 400 dogs. One of my fosters is 5 years old. Why does that matter? It matters because for 5 years this dog had NEVER felt solid ground on his feet, only chicken coop wire, for 5 years he had NEVER been held or loved by anyone, for 5 years he barely got to eat, for 5 years he never had a fresh drink of water, never had his nails clipped. He was used to breed and make money. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it us (people) that domesticated the dog and taught them to rely on us for food and affection and love? If that is the case then isn't it our job to take care of them? If you don't know what a puppy mill is or don't know what it's like just google it. If you have any sort of a heart it will break. This is what got me started and so passionate about helping out the best I can.
