Notes from the Prayer Warrior

It’s Pastor Hutch calling and it’s time to be praying again…I will not be satisfied with any compromise with regard to the Day of Silence in schools. My desire is that there be no Day of Silence recognition during the school day. This activity can take place before or after school just like Christian activities. They already have a Day of Respect, why do they need a Day of Silence?

God already had last Sunday, why does He need this Sunday?

I propose a year of silence for Pastor Fathead.

When was the last time an American kid was killed because he let people know he was Christian?

See, Hutch believes in the separation of gays and state.

@3: uh, AD 78, I think.

Finally. I wish Hutch would have a day of silence. Or a whole year. Yeah.

All of the best teachers I had in high school tended to express their personal viewpoints all the time. It led to great discussions, and a better educational experience overall.

I bet if those same teachers were expressing views that homosexuality is aberrant behavior, most of these parents wouldn't be complaining.

I respect the desires of some students to stay "neutral", but if they're that adamant about not participating then they should have no problem responding to criticism that they're not taking a stand against discrimination.

@3

Columbine, remember? The two gunmen ("gunboys"?) walking up to one of the victims, asking if she was a Christian, then shooting her? The anecdote that's been endlessly repeated?...

Except, of course, that it never actually happened?...

Gah... the student quoted in the article saying he "tried to stay neutral" by wearing a straight pride shirt? How the fuck is that neutral? If he chose to wear a "white pride" shirt to an MLK day event he'd be sent packing faster than you could write an angry blog post about it.

And he is insulted that he got slapped for wearing a shirt like that. Moron.

No, he shouldn't have been slapped, because that's what we call assaulting another student, but he should have been taken aside and made to turn that inside out, put on another shirt.

@6

Even if the story about the girl dying because she wouldn't denounce god or christ or who ever were true, it still wouldn't count as someone being killed because she was openly christian. She was killed because two crazy people decided to murder their classmates, chirstian or not, the girl would have died.

We need a day of silence because there are still crazy people around who crack jokes about ripping the arms off of girly men and beating them with the wet end.

Ass hole.

What the hell--

If Hutch and his ilk want compulsory moments of silence in public schools, they ought to be rejoicing over a whole day of it.

Well Hutcherson and his collaborators have formed an organization: Coalition to Defend Education (CoDE). You should check out their website at www.defendeducation.org. Don't let the website fool you- they are not interested in making the schools "neutral" but are interested in making inroads that equate discussion about sexual orientation (and GSA's) as either "sex clubs" (Hutcherson's words) or as GSA's as an organization that should be treated similarly violating the boundary such as church and state. They accuse GSA's of not acting in a "positive" manner... and their "positive" position quotes Gordon Hinckley- the recent past president for the Mormon Church.

I've formed, along with a couple of others (upon the suggestion of a Snoqualmie Valley School District taxpayer) the nonprofit group Coalition to REALLY Defend Education. This group will be assisting those that want to stop people like Hutcherson and CoDE from attempting to intimidate and harass LGBT students and their community supporters. GLSEN does a great job of advocacy with the kids in school (including the Day of Silence). However there are some of us that feel that GLSEN needs to be supported by those of us that will actively stand up to the hysteria the right wing fringe dishes out. GLSEN's role is education. Our role is to point out the hypocrites and defend the actively stand up to those who twist logic to further their own agendas, such as CoDE. Organizations like CoDE are growing stronger across the country and it's time something is done to further rebut their specious arguments.

We'll have a website up shortly this sets out our plan to help keep these students and the community members that support them safe and come up with methodologies that rebut organizations like CoDE by exposing their true intent.

Dear Pastor Hutch,

Y'all already have one whole day devoted to Martin Luther King, Junior. Why do you feel that you need an additional month for black history? I don't get it.

Dave Coffman @12

Good luck with your efforts. Any way I can be in touch with your group before the web presence is available?

So, is he equating Homosexuality with Christianity? A constitutionally protected right?

Dear Pastor Hutch, I want equal rights, not special rights, so it is only fair that you too have a Day of Silence. Today is that day, so STFU!

I love Dave Coffman...this man has a serious pair. EVERYBODY needs to join the Coalition to REALLY Defend Education....this is definitely going to piss Hutcherson and this ridiculous CODE group off.
