I think you made them feel like wankers, making a big deal out of there being no women there except you gathering material to write about. And you made fun of important cinema terminology like sexploitation. Film geeks are easily angered.
Who doesn't love lady shenanigans? What an asshole.
Also: "YOU KNOW WHAT SERVES AN IMPORTANT PURPOSE? YOUR 'RECORD LABEL.'"
I like how he thanked you at the end. That was especially thoughtful after he called you a yo yo. Is calling someone a yo yo an insult? I guess I just don't understand "the kidz" these days. Sigh...
Pretty funny stuff. But I don't know, "not as bad as Mudede" is almost sort of an insult. I mean, for Chrissake, a monkey typing with its feet would be "not as bad as Mudede."
But hey, he got a link to his Myspace page out of it on SLOG. Your review is still correct, he gets very slightly less unheard of - it's win-win!
A movie review that "serves no purpose"? That sounds bad. Please be more purposeful in your movie reviewing.
Was anyone else happy to see that even in this rant he still managed to spell "capitol" correctly?
I'm pretty sure that guy does indeed watch blacksploitation movies without even a hint of irony.
Especially (and also humerously) because that was a LOT more conservative in format than a lot of hipstery reviews I have read.
It's Pauline KAEL. She deserves better.
I'd like to point out that, surprising or not, this wasn't me.
Meh, he's only got 81 "friends" on MySpace - and about a third of those appear to be indie record labels/stores.
Clearly, Jason is a Loser.
He doesn't speak for all Jasons. Then again, I have no opinion. Ain't that America for you and me?
"waaaaah. waaaaaah. somebody said something bad and mean about me on myspace and now i have to tell everyone on slog about it. waaaah. waaaaaah."
Lindy, I love you and your pieces.
Please say we can go get coffee when I finally move to Seattle.
I'm often the only lone female when I attend small, cult-type movie screenings, so I did laugh when I saw that.
But Jason has a point. I have to admit, when I previously viewed films such as She-Ra: Secret of the Sword, Stephen Chow's The 60 Million Dollar Man, and Candy Snatchers at the Grand Illusion, I did so frivolously. But now I will watch such cinematic masterpieces unironically (and without applying any of that pesky theory to it, as Charles Mudede is wont to do) and approach them as the serious works of art the Grand Illusion presents them to be.
"name checking fucking Hegel in a movie review" made me laugh, a lot. Next time, Lindy, you should. I like your work a lot, don't pay mind to the haters.
Jason is so lame he surfs.
WoW!
I loved that review... Keep on keeping on, Lindy!
I'd just like to add my voice to the contingent of Jasons who love Lindy and her reviews.
Was Teenage Hitchhikers any good?
Lindy, can you please just take over writing everything at the Stranger? Your review of the Wicker Man is what got me reading it in the first place and your stuff is consistently the best.
Ditto @15 and @22--you're great, Lindy.
Lindy, I think you're awesome and I always want to invite you over to watch cartoons but you're so popular and all the cool kids like you and what if you don't like me back?
Not to take anything away from Ms. West's columns/reviews, but I couldn't help but notice that they are quite similar to those written by Joe Bob Briggs in his column "Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-in." Instead of a pretend redneck from deep in the heart of Texas, we have a disaffected hipster from deep in the heart of Cap Hill, but the tone is almost identical. The difference, though, is that Joe Bob added an element of social satire to the mix so that his reviews did not become parodies of themselves. When Ms. West's reviews first appeared, I found them funny and fresh. Now, however, it is difficult to see them as anything but lazy and redundant. I'm sure the target audience doesn't mind, but they could be so much better...
you dont always have to link to your detractors.
I want some capitol cocaine. I think my friend Drew's brother knows a dealer who hangs out at Bauhaus.
