You can tell she's been a schoolteacher, OK?

As she pauses for a question, OK?

The banality of evil...

yuck.

i like that she introduced a bill "requiring" schools to tell parents what clubs their kids are involved in. because, you know, uh, talking to your kids--say, maybe asking them what they're doing at school--is way too hard for parents?

Man that felt good to fire off an email to that wench.
I used her own weapon, the Bible, against what she's done. I'm tellin ya people, read it, study it, know it so you can always shove their words back in their face. I hated being forced to go to church 3 times a week growing up, but let me say, because my parents forced me, I have all the knowledge, chapter and verse to take down these fake christians. How dare she lump us all into one group. Being gay does not equate to pedophilia and if you dont believe me, ask my son. I think we need to make our own video of how Oklahomans are penetrating society and they are evil sinners with no brain, they fuck their cousins and their cattle. Well isn't that right? Its fine to lump everyone into one group isn't it? She seems to think so.
Oh and why hasn't Seattle lasted only a few decades? It should be in ruins if her theory was correct.
Someone go down there now and fuck her, she must need it.

Totally vile indeed. Imagine what it's like for our openly gay elected officials like Jim Roth and Al McCaffrey to have to combat those attitudes at the State Capitol.

It could be a response to some movement at the City Council to approve a domestic partnership ordinance. It probably totally set her off, since they're only one vote away.

Well BFD. So they don't like quars in OK. Whooptee do. Like we never knew that. Only now we have a tape of it. Well call her and tell her you don't like her back, and confirm all her irrational fears.
Not News. Not worth any attention, much less this comment. Have a nice weekend!

You would not believe all of the new recruits I get since I'm a teacher. Why spend time preparing my students for high-stakes testing when I can indoctrinate them?

She is frightening.

The ignorance she is expressing here is astounding and terrifying.

And @5 - I heard a sermon last week in which a pastor of a mainline denomination that has the "gay issue" on the agenda for the summer meetings (mainly, whether or not to allow gay clergy to have partners) acknowledged that this hatred of and prejudice against homosexuals has no basis in scripture, and that it would be a horrible thing to see our denomination torn apart by it.

Some people get it.

Why did it feel *so good* to send a nastygram to her like that? I hope she believes that I'm from Oklahoma!

Posted by ahhhh.... | March 7, 2008 4:19 PM

I didn't send a nastygram, I sent a nice formal email worded in Christian terms. It does no good to be nasty to a fundamental Christian, it just makes them hate you more, but if you talk in their language and terms, it may not win them over, but they might think twice about running over the scripture and judging another human being. In their belief, they will have to answer to God on judgment day and explain why they went against Christ's teachings, just as I will answer for putting my dick in my boyfriends mouth and ass.
She did not deserve my kind words, I could have tore her a new one, but Jesus wouldn't like that.

Of course there's nothing in the Bible about hating faggots. We just do it because you make us want to puke.

I'm thinking the ancient Roman and Egyptian cultures lasted for more than, you know, a few decades. I could be confused, though. Maybe they don't exist in her mythology, like dinosaurs, hominids or flattering hairstyles. She's so determined to be EveryMom for all the youngsters in school. If only she had any practical knowledge about the world..like facts.

Compassionate Conservatism at work. And they say Evolution is a myth.

Calvin (#8), please refrain from being a jaded douche.

Some people still think prejudice is a big fuckin' deal. But some people are apathetic and look the other way when they encounter it.

I call those people jaded douches.

I'm always told I'm melodramatic when I equate these Religious Extremist with the Nazi terror and the holocaust faced by Gay people in Europe. Here I'll say it again and I know someone will call it hysterical. These people are like the Nazis, The Third Reich or Third Reign of Christ. It started with words and ended with acts of nightmare.

The bigots have increased their volume because they know they are fighting a losing battle. They are like the redneck southern sheriffs of the Civil Rights era. Popular opinion is going against them. There may be a long way to go in terms of legislation for equal rights but more people are recognizing this type of hatred for what it is.

Pittsburgh, PA (which she mentions) has a grand total of ONE gay man on city council. He was just elected in the fall, and is the first openly gay man or woman to ever serve on city council. I'm proud that he's there, and it hardly constitutes "controlling".

Also, Head Start makes you gay? that's a new rightwing fallacy to me.

The woman is obviously a bigot, and I have no respect for what she is saying. I'm gay myself, and it turns my stomach to think that people will talk about me that way because I'm trying to live my life being true to myself.

But I cannot advocate muzzling her, because I wouldn't want to allow her to be able to silence me, when I speak out for gay rights. We will not win everyone over anytime soon, but we must allow level heads and reason to prevail on our side. They don't. They react not with reason, but by regurgitation of propoganda.

I don't ever want anyone who supports gay rights to operate that way. Support for gay rights should be based on the belief that we are all humans, and deserve deference from others in our personal decisions. We shouldn't shove dogma down the public's throat. If we do, we've taken the easy way out, and we haven't really changed anything.

We can't attack this woman and those like her, and expect them to change. We must show them that we mean them no threat, that we mean them no harm, and that we wish to live without the imposition of their values, just as they do with regard to us. It is a much harder thing to accomplish, but it will be more lasting and more rewarding.

My BF just sent her a nice voicemail requesting a list of the the nations that crumbled "just a few decades" after accepting homosexuality. We're hoping Atlantis is on the list. Because facts and knowledge aren't taught in schools anymore. Only indoctrination. I couldn't agree more...

Jim, you're a breath of fresh air. And now both you and I are going to get a ration of shit because we believe that it's enough to just have society tolerate queers. No, most of the folks here will settle for nothing less than approval of them shoving their flaming faggotry down everyone else's throat. And then they sit around and moan because everyone hates them. Gee, I wonder why.

"flaming faggotry"

what the hell - you are nuts

most gay guys are as ordinary as any other crowd, look in the mirror, and try not to be so self oppressed

when you are out - completely out - stuff like your trash talk is not even part of your environment

you are just yourself, totally, mo fuss, no acting, no cover - AND NO BODY GIVES A DAMNED SHIT. Why should they?

welcome to Seattle, post Stonewall by a long shot

This is being preached from every fundamentalist christian pulpit across America. And has been since I believed in that shit in the 70's.
They are as convinced in the truth of their words as they are that God in Heaven sent His only Son....and as we are rock-solid sure we were made gay from before birth and all we can do is accept the way we are.
So hitting them with evil behavior only confirms their beliefs in the inherent evil of gay people. To them, 'The Gay Agenda=Being accepted by Americans as normal', therefore embracing the most evil people on earth. Fundamentalist christians are every bit as rabid as fundamentalist Muslims. They just haven't hit us with their violence--yet. Someday us knee-jerk, accept-everyone-for-who-they-are Liberals will realize these people are serious to their core, so we at least know who the enemy REALLY is.
I am so glad this came out. I hope it's published to everyone in the nation before election day. These evil people (yes evil) people's beliefs could use a public airing.

I'm not sure what to make of the "flaming faggotry" remark, maybe because I don't know what it's supposed to mean. What are gays shoving down anyone's throat? The point of my earlier post was to say, that yelling at this woman won't change her mind, but that we (gays) can't let this woman and those like her keep us from being who we are.

I'm not trying to turn anyone gay. I just wish they'd stop trying to turn me straight.

I pity this woman's ignorance, but I'm kind of jealous of her absolute certainty. It must be nice to never question anything your pastor tells you... You know, like just turn off your brain - or never turn it on to begin with.

I agree that flaming her will only strengthen her convictions, though.

Posted by Schweighsr | March 8, 2008 12:11 PM

@schweighsr

The desire for certainty in an uncertain world is what creates attitudes like hers. To change things for real, people must become comfortable with uncertainty. The less comfortable people are with uncertainty, the more susceptible they will be to kind of crap this woman is saying.

Comfort with, not fear of, the unknown, it could be argued, is at the very heart of tolerance.

I'm still in shock after listening to this woman. If she was in any position of dictator-type power, she'd be akin to Hitler and Saddam Hussein. I'm sure she'd have us gays gassed in concentration camps. The good people of Oklahoma should be outraged at being tricked into electing such an ignorant person to public office.

Speaking as a student studying outside the state, but born and raised in OK, she in no way represents the people my community and/or the loving and accepting adults that helped to raise me.

Each year Tulsa has a large and well atteneded Gay March and Festival. Families bring their children and friends come to show support. In no way is she a good representation of the great people we have here.

That being said... may she burn in hell for thinking she can judge others that way. I have no idea who voted for her and Paul you are so right. I am outraged that she was elected.
